Top Ten HS Players you have seen this decade

Way Way Back

There was a kid that played baseball in Greensboro that could flat mash a baseball. He ended up being the starting QB at North Carolina back when they were a top 5 team in the nation several years in a row. He played SS and led his team to the state 4a finals in baseball. (After leading his football team to the state semifinals and being the starting point guard for the school basketball team that made it all the way to the state championship game.) If he had not blown out his knee his senior year of college he would have played football or baseball professionally.

The kids name was Rod Elkins.

 

Not To far Back In Time

My list isn't as long as people that have been in the area longer than me, but here is my short list:

Never got the chance to actually see Daniel Bard play High School ball, so I can't actually put him on my list, but if I had, he would be there!

 

The very best HS players could beat you from the mound, or with the bat, or with the glove or on the bases. The P/SS I saw who fit the bill were, Dustin Harrington, Matt Payne,Ryan Leach and Alex White. Guys who could have been two way players at the DI level. I'm sure there were others that I did not see.

Most dominant pitching/hitting combos-Madison Bumgarner & Daniel Bard

The two most dominant hitters of the decade went to the same school (East Rutherford) and wreaked havoc at the varsity level for four years. Chad Flack and Zeke Blanton pretty much re-wrote the NCHS record book in most of the significant offensive categories. Alex Hill would also have to be in the conversation, but I did not see him play.

One guy who would have been near the top without the injuries was Addison Johnson.

MATT IS IN THE MAJORS RIGHT NOW,,NO WAY TO LEAVE HIM OUT.

 

Agree with most of the names listed. But after watching Cameron Maybin weekin weekout on the AAU circuits since he was about 11 years old, I just saw that young man do things that others could only dream about, Cameron is clearly my #1.

Daniel Bard would be my #2, and this other one isn't my #3 but I haven't seen his name listed and he would definitely be in my top 10-- Lonnie Chisenhall.

Btw travisunc, you mean injuries "and a woman" ended that one career, don't you?

 

Obviously Daniel Bard gets his accolades from pitching, but the kid was a masher in HS. One of the most feared batters in NC. Daniel didn't hit HR's---he hit bombs. You looked at his frame and he looked wiry, but the kid was strong. He hit one in Jupiter that was amazing. For those that have been there before, you will recall the CF fences with 100' screens (or however high they are). Daniel sent a missile that didn't land near the top of that fence---no, he hit a shot that was stopped by the fence; otherwise that ball was still rising (with a wood bat.) He had unique hitting power!

 

Agreed about Bard. Also I'd have to add Kyle Seager (one of best hitters ever to come out of Piedmont NC) to my top 10 list also. Since about 8 years old, Kyle's just always had a great swing, but he's an example of a kid WHO WORKED HIS BUTT OFF to get where he is, and I'm happy for him. I can remember every single day after Legion BP, the coaches would cut the players loose to go get a quick pregame snack, and most would leave, some would just find some shade, but you'd always see Kyle up in the batting cage (and this is after BP) he would be hitting balls off a T. Kid is focused still.

 

I'm a younger guy, so I haven't seen some of the folks that are mentioned on here. Here's my list though:

This is a great thread though. Really helps you grasp how many awesome ball players we've had in this state in recent years.
