runners on first and second, no outs.......line shot off the pitchers leg, deflected to the shortstop who stepped up to the base line to play the ball......runner from second (who didnt leave second until the ball hit the pitcher) plows, and i mean plows the shortstop over and goes on to take home.

    ruling????

will tell you how that one came out later.

    Just a guess...

...but my understanding of the rule is the runner cannot interfere with an offensive player trying to field the ball. She has to avoid her. Don't think it matters if it was not hit directly to her (a deflection). As long as the SS was actually going for the ball, runner interference, she is out.

Hey cheeze, everyone is good, thanks for asking. Lost our conference playoff game today and just missed making the playoffs so HS season is over. DD played good and had a couple HRs this year so looking forward to TB season starting but glad to get a few weeks off to recharge the batteries!

    NCAA rule 12.9.7

12.9.7 When she interferes with a fielder attempting to field a batted ball,
interferes with a fielder attempting to throw the ball or intentionally
    interferes with a thrown ball.

    Notes:
    1. If a ball ricochets off one defensive player and another player has the
opportunity to make a play, the runner will be ruled out if she intentionally
    interferes with the second fielder.

Sounds like the right call to me by JavelinCatcher....I'd be willing to guess that was not the call made, was it?

Base hit for the batter, runner on 2nd out going to 3rd?

Just a guess.....like a delayed dead ball call?

My guess how it was really called was the run scored and the ump had no idea whether his call was right or wrong.

ruling was that since it went off the pitcher, it was a "free for all" wth is that??? when asked, it meant that because it deflected off of a defensive player, no interference was justified. another blow call by some of cleveland counties finest i guess.

Once the ball is hit "in front or through" a defensive player and deemed a "playable ball", offensive base runner has some rights to the running lane... which would be the case since pitcher touched the ball or in this case, the ball touched her...no interference unless in the "eyes" of the ump, she runs over defensive player intentionally...

You see the call most of the time with runners on 1st and 2nd, ground ball hit to left of third baseman, who attempts to field it, but doesn't, then shortstop steps up to field ball and collides with runner advancing from 2nd...

He had the intent of the rule right.... based on what you said, could have called her out on the collision... based on intentional contact, unsportsmanlike behavior, etc...

Don't see that one very often. tough call
