Worthy of mention

Had the opportunity to watch that team from Rutherford County and Randleman yesterday and it was a great game. Kids played great, gave 110% and everybody could leave with their heads held high.

However there were two side notes that really caught my attention......

First I noticed a group of kids practicing on the baseball field which is located behind the softball field. They were primarily on the infield and 3rd base side which put them at the most distant point from the softball field. I could not help but to be impressed when the playing of the Anthem began for the start of the sofball game, every kid on the baseball field stopped, removed their caps, and stood at attention. Commendations to coaches who have instilled this type of respect in their players.

On another note the officiating is also worthy of mention. Mr. Steve Pope was behind the plate and I didn't get his partners name on the bases. I will say upfronth there were disagreements on calls, as there always will be. However, these gentlemen treated every question and disagreement with the UTMOST courtesy and respect regardless of whether it be coach, player, or fan.

Often we forget the lessons of the game are bigger than the game. At the point we stop instilling life lessons such as respect, courtesy, work ethic, and supporting others......we miss the true objective of preparing young people to be the best they can be in life.

Special thanks to these folks who brought me a better focus on the big picture.
