umps dont seem to understand slapping either though could be the local umps. i would swear the rules dont change about staying in the box when you make contact. most of them i have seen let those slappers hit the ball even when out the front ... but this one ....

    bigger field

the defense for slappers also opens up the field for slappers who can hit the ball out of the infield, most of the defense's that I've seen employ a drawn in infield with the outfield playing at normal depth, thus opening up a greater area to punch a hit over the infield and in front of outfield, but my favorite defense is when the outfield comes in to the infield cut or about ten feet behind and we swing away instead of slapping and hit it over everyones head, and even a slapper with no power can Happy Gilmore one that clears the outfield and I saw one girl clear the fence.

.....looking at the final regular season ACC stats, only one batter in the top 20 batting averages is a leftie slapper.

No BS, in a HS game this year I saw an ump call a kid out fdor stepping in front of or maybe even touching the plate with her foot.....the odd thing is, she never made contact with the ball.
    Whats the rule on that?

...and now the score is 9-2 UCLA on pure hitting.

In my day, I hit as a leftie, and many many times drag bunting was succesful so beleive me, I know how cool the slap in softball is....but East asked the question, and I still say that even though there are some awesome slappers and no doubt they can ruin your game dinner after a game by running, running, running.
Last, slappers are for getting on base.
    Hitting is for scoring runs.
Again a true leftie who can bunt slap and hit with power is untouchable.

9 runs by UCLA did not come from slapping.

You can think what you want, more power to ya, but give me 9 hitters against your slappers and I'll beat you every day.

And I'll use some small ball as well.

    to sum up my observations

I know there are very good slappers in the college game. I just think that the percent of good ones is low. Some of 'em (not the good ones) get up there and I swear it doesn't look like they come even close to contacting the ball.

....slappers are role players. No slander. Ya'll know how I love the lefties, but just like a team will change a righthanded pitcher in baseball when the opposition is bringing lefties to the plate, so goes equally to the chess game involved in softball. Big kid gets a base hit, bam, pinch runner, ......runners on 2b and 3b, slapper due to go to the plate.....she better be DogGone good buddy, otherwise her simple dribbler to the 3b side is an easy out. I'm looking at my bench for a kid to put the ball in the grass.

***a little off the thread but it will tie in......runners on 1B and 2B, no outs, your best hitter is in the hole, now on deck as the new batter comes to the plate.

    Obvious bunt situation many times......
So you bunt the runners over, now what should you expect the defense to do pitching wise to your big dog? They'll walk him and put the force play on.
Now same scenario but its a leftie slapper at the plate, bunt situation, yep, and the slapper is in control.

Point is you can't have a cookie cutting coahing approach.

    Situation, situation, situation.

I've seen some really good slapping the last couple of days. This is especially true for the slapping that bounces up over the infielders' heads and they have to wait til it comes down before they can play it.

I've seen so many games this weekend that I can't remember the team, but one team had about 5 or 6 lefties leading off except for maybe one rightie. And they were pretty effective. I'm thinking it may have been Tennessee or Arizona.
