......I think a player gets 5 years, or 10 semesters to complete 4 years worth of studies.
My question is this, Say a kid quits because of a coaching change and then when the new coach comes in, does the player have to abide by the consecutive semester rule? Most likely so, but say the kid got hurt in the off season while she was not a "on roster" player, can she redshirt?
No dog in this hunt but I know someone who could use TBR advice.
    Thanks, Fishman

Once you start school, your clock is always running, whether you are on the team or not. Only exceptions I know of are Mormon missions (NCAA gives you that year back) and medical redshirts (which you can get more than one of, but that's not a situation you would ever hope to get in to.)

And I never directly addressed your question about the injury while not playing... You can't get a medical redshirt if you're not on the active roster. That's why they give you eight active semesters in a 10-semester window. Just count that as the two semesters of grace period.

If she is injured when going back on the active roster and could not play when she returns, then the school can apply for a medical hardship waiver, but the NCAA would need to approve that and it is not likely to be granted since she left the team and was injured while not active. It's an NCAA thing and they tend to lean towards awarding years back for those who are hurt on the field.
