    The Wilson Times posted their player of the year. This article discussed 3 very deserving Wilson players that were considered: Mitchell Wheeler, Zach Houchins, and Zack Lee. Congrats to all of them. Below is the article.


    BASEBALL
    Of all the players of the year, this one was the hardest to decide. There were three players in Wilson County who merited serious consideration.
    Fike senior Mitchell Wheeler, who will play at Barton College, put up some serious numbers at the plate and on the mound.

    Wheeler hit .517 with 43 RBIs, 12 doubles and eight home runs. His 1.062 slugging percentage led the Big East Conference and was fourth-best in the state. On the mound, Wheeler was 6-1 with a 62 strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA.

    Hunt senior Zach Houchins was named Big East Player of the Year as he hit .537 to share the Big East batting title while slugging six homers and 14 doubles and knocking in 31 runs. Houchins, who is headed to Louisburg College, emerged as a reliable closer for the Warriors during their run to the state 3-A finals, where they lost to East Rowan.

    But my pick for baseball player of the year is Hunt senior Zack Lee, who seemed to have the best all-around game of anyone.
    As Hunt's No. 1 starting pitcher, Lee, a Francis Marion (S.C.) signee, got the ball in nearly every big game for the Warriors and went 7-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 62 2/3 innings. As the regular shortstop, Lee batted .477 with 24 RBIs and scored 31 runs. He also stole 13 bases.

    No knock against Houchins or Wheeler, who play the game as hard as anyone, but Lee always seemed to embody the spirit of a ballplayer. Rare was the game in which his uniform wasn't smeared with dirt and his leadership ability was unquestioned.

    Congratulations to all the players of the year as well the ones who made my decisions tougher.

    Special award

    Learned today at the Impact Showcase at NCST that my super buddy and former Stretchlon Star Dylan Brown of SSS won the Sam Narron Award this year. The award is given to a player that doesn't just play a great game on the field BUT proves that beyond a shadow of a doubt he LOVES the game of baseball. Congrats son and I wish you the best of luck at the next level.
