"I can't say that "one is better than the other" ... I can say that each has it's place to fit a specific need." From my original post.

AL Need = Summer baseball with area players. Being "seen" is not a priority. Already signed or not interested in signing, but good enough and desire enough to play one more game in the summer sun. Quality alternative in many areas to be able to play at home during the summer.
Last shot for those who have signed to play with friends or area players.

SC Need = Want to be seen by college and MLB employees.Wants a shot at playing next level somewhere. Mom and dad willing to pay what it takes to see it through. Evaporates after Fall of rising Senior HS year (normally).

I don't think anyone in their right mind can refute SC is where to play to be seen...esp certain events. Just hope you are on a team that will get you seen.

I think the root of the SC vs AL in many cases is the perceived "quality" of the team. "My AL team can beat your SC team..." mentality. Possibly. Who knows. 2 different needs, 2 different paths.

FWIW had to post this quite from a recent SI article on Jason Heyward:

Gone are the days when the next generation's All-Stars were bred on sandlots and schooled by crusty high school coaches. In the new paradigm a kid with a major league dream needs talent, drive and parents as committed to the cause as the player—the ultimate soccer moms and baseball dads.

The cost of playing showcase can't be overlooked. It's prohibitive for some parents. I hear upfront costs of $1,500. to $2,000. to join some showcase programs, before any playing begins. It can get really expensive! I know of one situation where a parent spent over $8,000. in one summer traveling around with one premier showcase program their son was on. (Never received an offer) I guess the player and their parents have to ask themselves was it worth it after it's all over with.

"WORTH" is a relative term - it is measured against specific expectations. As parents, we will spend the $$$ on SOMETHING (perhaps even a college savings fund). I think most coaches are LESS concerned with the name of the team but more with the quality of the player. An excellent student will excel in whatever environment as will and excellent baseball player. ~ Just One Man's Opinion~

    The Quality of the Player

You're right with that statement. The quality of the player which takes in his character, his reputation, his academics, as well as his baseball skills. I've listened to a couple of speeches the last two years from college coaches about the importance of character & academics during the recruiting process. It's important during the selection process for these coaches to choose wisely in recruiting. Some of these schools are constantly being burned by players breaking rules or not fulfilling their academic obligations. Head coaches don't want any potential headaches.

They don't want them, but the risk is weighed according to talent. The greater the talent, the more willing they will take a risk.

You're right. They do take risks. I listened to a hour-long speech on this very subject, and the coach that spoke continues to have a problem in this area. Evaluating recruits is a tuff job.

This is the most underated showcase team on the circuit. Ty Bissett does a great job with this team especially at the last minute when he gets a chance to enter a big showcase. This weekend his team was the #8 seed coming out of pool play and they proceeded to beat the # 1 seed Upstate Mavericks, the #4 seed Philadelphia Senators to make it to the championship game where they fell to the Dirtbags. They lost only 2 games and both were to the Dirtbags as they were in the same pool. Way to go Dawgs!!
