ALL-STATE

Who would you take out of the first team in exchange for Brett?
It will help me next year doing our All-State teams. Not complaining just
trying to get some input. Are Brett's numbers correct?

What player or players did we miss in the state of NC?
Just wondering how we can improve...looks pretty scattered out to us but we can learn from others. Thanks in advance.

 

Quickly coming to mind from "down East" are Narron, Maples and McDonald. Surely others.
Yours was a good effort, with all solid possibles - but heavy in the west of Raleigh/Piedmont area.

Right or wrong, Coaches Association does it by classification with 1A-4A all having an all-state team.


[By the way, the narrative/numbers on one of the players was not correct. I know because I have the correct ones and the book. No fault of yours, but I just wonder where you got the info. Maybe ask (verify) coaches from now on. Player is an all-stater for certain either way. That's all I'll say there; not looking to argue. ]

 

Since you asked, I dont want to go down the road of naming any names to remove, I will just say if you do this on #s alone, its not ever going to work out.

You have some kids that will play an entire year and never have to face a kid that will pitch in D1 baseball, then you have Brett and the others from his league that face a regular rotation of D1 level pitchers who are backed up by some teams that have an entire lineup of kids that will play college ball.

Put Brett or Holbeton or someone like that in a smaller league with no D1 talent and they may hit 30 HR's and bat .700

My point is simply, don't go on #s alone in naming an All State Baseball Team. Many, many other factors to look at....

 

In support of SouthCharlotteSports' point, another reason to not rely upon high school stats is that their quality is only as good as the scorer keeping the scorebook. Because of this and the point that SCS makes, college recruiters and professional scouts place very little stock in high school stats.

All very good points...and Brett Austin may be the most talented baseball player in the state- according to some pro scouts.

He works very hard, but his god given talents makes the game seem easy to him. It's like the game slows down for him.

I know this if I was starting a team and I could have the first pick, Austin would be it--a great catcher and powerful gun in the OF. A switch-hitter with equal power from both sides....and plays the game with an edge. Wants to be up with the game on the line; hates to walk, and most times produces. The kid is a winner everywhere he goes.

 

All the arguments for, or against certain players being named to an all-state list lends credence as to why having all-state teams by classification is a good idea. The players can only perform vs. the competition that presents itself.

 

By the way, the one high school stat that college recruiters DO care about: GPA. It's not unusual for it to be the first question asked of a player by a college coach.
