    Middle of the season

The worst part is when these coaches steal players in the middle of the summer season. Players should have to be released from a team to play, regardless if it is 'championship' play or not. That will prevent some of this from happening.

Bingo... why arent rosters locked requiring coaches to release players? There are valid reasons to leave a team and most coaches would release a player without issue and if not then an appeal can be made to the sanctioning body. This process would also make players/parents think more about the change.

I believe ASA and some other sanctions do have roster rules. I remember players having to be cleared for release by one team before they could play on a different team in an ASA sanctioned tournament during a season.

If a team was found to be playing an illegal player they had to forfeit.

    Only Championship play

When it happend to my team two days before a tournament, I made my calls and was told that the only thing that ASA can enforce is championship play, which is State, Regional, etc. I would not release the players, and called the coach who was the offender. Didn't matter, they played anyway. Coaches that don't have integrity don't care about this issue. I was the one scrambling for players two days before a tournament, so the other players they abandoned can still showcase thier talent. AND I added those players legally to my roster.

    Going on many moons now

This, unfortunately, has also been going on for years and years now as well. Way, way back when, when my dd tried out for her first TB team ever, this very thing happened. Only reason our family was aware of it is that we had one of the players he tried to recruit out from underneath of the team. Handed me a business card with his name, cell number, home and office numbers...said he already had a team...would love the dd to play for him. Of course, he had told the coach he was giving up coaching and looking for a team. Needless to say, we stuck with the first team, tore up the card and couldn't be bothered speaking to the second.

this is one of my favorite subjects to hate. like ben said, we've both been around 12-13 years, and its been going on the whole time. its just more blatent now than ever.

as for outing them on this board rocks, i have issues with that, it violates our rules. but this shouldnt stop you from pm'n ben about who it was or others from talking privately about who does this. i personally know of three coaches who are known for this, all three very well known.

so i think its best to not list them here, but some would be suprised as to who is guilty of doing this.

ben, you got to know every kid on my team very well, hell, we were like family.....and you never once tried to steal one of my girls, not even laronda mcclain. a true gentleman who walks the walk. i know for a fact that ric is the same way.

dont tell dawgfan, he has a couple of axes to grind.

know the worst thing about it???? these people believe its how things are done..........all of them leave a trail of broken dreams and promises behind them....

Perhaps ASA, which was known as "junior olympic" softball, could follow the lead of USAV, which is "junior olympic" volleyball. There are ethics rule sheets that coaches must sign, saying they will not contact a player who is already in another club. For the duration of the season--(which would need to be determined) If it is determined that a coach has violated these ethics requirements, then that coach or club is penalized or removed from play.
