Unethical coaches, penality or not???

Discussion in 'Softball Forum' started by cheeze105, Aug 21, 2010.

What would you do to a coach who lures a player to their team during the season?

I was talking to a parent just last week who said her daughter had an opportunity to go play with another team and the daughter and the parents wanted to desperately. The parents told the daughter they had already made a commitment and they would honor their commitment. They said the daughter cried and was very upset with the parents but they felt like she would eventually understand that they did what was right by her current coach and teammates. They earned my respect.

Saw another coach talking several times this past weekend to a great player who just joined our team. Decided not to confront but I'm curious as to what will happen or maybe it was just friendly conversation but I doubt it. Any suggestions on handling this. Thanks.

I'd hate for you to lose your great player but if so there are plenty of players wanting an opportunity to play for a good coach.

    Don't worry, be happy!

If she is a "team hopper" they are cancer to your team anyway. Cut her loose and by all means don't beg her to stay.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought we were talking about "in season" recruiting. That's wrong...plain and simple. If one completes their season and chooses to go elsewhere--that's a family decision and they will do what they think is best for their DD. It may be the wrong choice, but it is their decision.

Sure would be nice to read some threads about what is going on that is good about HS & TB softball. It seems like many of the threads revolve around the negative. After awhile the only members you will have posting are the one's that have an axe to grind.

If a young lady is classified as a "team hopper" shouldn't the coach know this before offering her a spot? It makes sense that a coach should check out each player before inviting them to the team no different then a parent checking on a new prospective team for their dd.

I think that some people are wrongly classified as a "team hopper". If it's not working or it's not what you expected it to be then I see no need in staying on a team where you're unhappy. Before I get blasted for the last sentence I'm not condoning a player leaving during the season she committed herself for but once a season is over and tryouts begin she is free to do what she or her parents feels is in her best interest.

It is definitely worth further investigation by a coach if a girl changes teams every season whether it be in season or out. Maybe the problem is not the team...

In our case this is "in season" recruiting. We just had tryouts and this young lady accepted a spot on our team.

That's an excellent way to do it. I fully understand the reasons why a player may move from one team to another. I think the reason cheeze brought this up are the raiding of players from a team during the season selling players a bill of goods. Again, after the summer or fall season is completed, any player should evaluate their situation and determine what's best.

There's some great coaches out there. If you have found one, then it should be about the letters on the front of the shirt, not the back.
