Top Uncommitted 2011's

Is there already a thread for this? I know of several very talented 2011 kids still out there waiting for the right school to find them.

I'd like to add Lou Trosch, SC Panther-East Meck, to this list. The funny thing about Lou is he doesn't catch your eyes with velocity, but after reading his stats after every game, you shake your head and say why? Why hasn't he committed? All he does is throws strikes and gets batters out. You don't pitch for SC Panthers unless you are good...and Trosch is very good.

Everybody gets hung up on velocity and I understand that, but most coaches don't have the time to watch a pitcher's makeup. A kid that has poise under pressure, makes that crucial pitch leading to the big out to end the inning. The kid that knows how to set up a batter...and most important, a kid that knows how to pitch to contact. That is a hard lesson to learn and most young college pitchers can't make that adjustment. They think their stuff is good enough to get college batters out....that doesn't happen. You ask a stud college hitter what pitchers give them the hardest time and they will all say it's the pitcher that can change speed, change eye level and can spin the ball in any count for strikes.---notice they never said velocity. A good recruiter that is an ex-pitcher looks for those kind of guy because they know those guys can pitch.

 

Povse -
6'8" and still growing. Reached 91mph later summer/fall. Max is a good kid who has the flashing lights in his eyes. He wants to be a MLB pitcher one day and I don't see him stopping until he gets there. With a little work on his mechanics, he could be scary good. You can't teach height. Very lanky as well and should fill out nicely.

Kenney -
Big and strong. He looks the part already of a college athlete. Has been working extremely hard with Jason Roach on his pitching game. Should post solid numbers in a very good conference this coming spring.

Brown -
Haven't seen him very much but have been told he's a 6.8 runner and a 1.85 down to 2nd.

Lapp -
Tyler is one of the hardest working kids I have ever coached. He works when nobody is watching. He has very raw power and has recently started swinging from the left side some. C/1B. Could really benefit from a good coaching staff. Yes Sir/No Sir. Will hustle and lead by example.

Robinson -
Captain of football team and could play small college football. Very raw OF who swings lefty. Tommy is a very strong athlete thanks to the football program. His baseball skills aren't as high as they could be but the writing is on the wall for him to be a good college baseball player if he would dedicate his time to the sport. Quiet kid who does the right thing on and off the field.

Snotherly -
Will probably make a commitment to a college football program and graduate early from high school but if he sticks around for the spring, he will be one of the Raleigh area's top ballplayers. Ben plays QB for the football team and plays CF and also pitches some for the baseball team. He catches almost everything in CF and will get dirty in a heartbeat. He's the kind of kid you want on a team because of his personality. He doesn't like losing and can keep the mood loose but serious at the same time. Teammates look up to him.

Colantino -
Above average defensively. Offense is coming around. AC is a very good kid can play some 3rd as well. He should be one of the state's top uncommitted catcher's at this point.

Thorpe -
Quick OF. Somewhat raw but the sky is the limit with his potential. Very nice young man who hates to lose. If he gets on 1st, he'll be on 2nd in 2 pitches.

Sykes -
Former App State commitment. Has gone seperate ways since then but it is not a knock on his pitching ability. Runs it mid-upper 80's with nice run. Tall and lanky. Very loose and coachable. One of the arms on a loaded high school pitching staff at Holly Springs.

Davis -
Another football player who could be a 2-sport guy on the next level depending on the school. Throws "hard" on the mound... mid 80's but it has that pop on it. I like him in the OF a lot personally... Dude will lay out or run into the fence to make a catch. He is as gritty as they come and the only time you see him with a clean uniform is on the day the coach hands them out.

Taylor -
Along with Colantino, will be one of the state's top uncommitted catchers. Haven't seen him enough to be real familiar.

Davis and Lawrence -
Haven't seen a ton to get a good feel for but the couple times I watched them, I really liked their game. Davis was a smooth looking MIF and Lawrence was a fundementally sound ballplayer who could play 3B, SS, 2B. Both can swing the bat.

 

blake herring, 6'1" RHP (low,mid 80's) Kinston HS

blake went 10-2 for us last year as a junior. the kid knows how to pitch, especially in the big games. lots of movement on his fastball. good kid as well. played for the cubs this summer and fall.

 

Having coached these 2 for years :

Brown - does a very nice job behind the plate, has a gun. Tell ya a little secret...the kid than also throw GAS on the mound, wish his HS would give him some innings.

Colantino - more than above average defensively imo, excellent arm, runs well and very strong chasis.

Both can definitely help someone at the next level...great kids to have un the dugout !

 

I have a couple that haven't been getting enough attention:

Ryan Yoder, C - Central Cabarrus. Yoder has played for CBC for years and this will be his 3rd year on varsity. Has a cannon (1.91 pop time). Hits to all fields with pop, doubles machine (25 in 2 years). Great kid, good student, leader of the ROTC program. Has been looked at by a number of schools, but no offers yet. More than held his own at the Battle of the Border Showcase at Winthrop (oppo HR, had 3 hits in 2 games, was clocked 1.94 by local scout).

Brandon Porter, SS - Central Cabarrus. Not a SS in college (most likely 3B or corner OF, can do both well). Quick hands, hit over .400 in the SPC last year with 6 bombs and did the same for Post 51 in Legion ball. Has turned around guys throwing 90, so hand quickness is legit. Probably a small college or JUCO guy, but kid can play.

Justin Hammond - Hopewell HS RFP/IF/OF - Great student, awesome hitter with strength to right or left field. FB 86-88 with a +CB.

Blain Lewis - Mallard Creek HS C - Very strong behind the plate, good bat, great speed on the base path.
