So , what are your thoughts on the dead periods? Are they to long? I can understand why they're are in place, but I can also see where they hurt some kids. Some kids don't play other sports and may want to keep doing workouts. Why should they have to take a month off. Would a 2 week dead period be better? What's your thoughts?

I would like to see it left up to the player. Make rules that prohibit mandatory workouts if necessary and not take away the player's right.

It is pretty frustrating that I can work with players from other schools but I can't work with players from my own schools.

I think we may be harming more than we are protecting.

If the player is serious enough about their sport then they will practice and workout on their own during the dead zone

if they make it the players choice then some coaches will take advantage of that. There are to many " its all about me" coaches out there. All they have to say is " you better choose to come to workouts".

The kids who want to work out on their own should be free to ask for and receive help from their coach.

The overwhelming majority of softball coaches are there for the kids!

Our high school coach has been having a hard time getting the players to participate in training. I hope she can get more participation in December.

They can work out with their travel ball coach all they want... there are no restrictions.

What if their high school coach is also their travel ball coach?

That's true; unless their HS coach is their TB coach. We have a few who do play TB. They are not the ones who need the extra work. We encourage our players to play TB. We encourage our players to play multiple sports.

Our players also know that we believe academics come first. As a matter of fact I don't know any coach that doesn't put academics first.

Maybe those rules don't quite fit softball?

Dead periods are already the players choice, aren't they?

Just because a period is declared "dead", doesn't really make it so.

In the end, it is up to individual kids whether or not there is a dead period. During this "dead" period, my dd is doing Shaun T's Insanity program at a gym 3 nights a week, working out at the gym 2-3 more days a week, has started sharpening up her catching skills with private lessons, has practice with TB team 1 day a week (if not a showcase all weekend), and hits the batting cages 2x a week....AND she knows if she wants to get more fielding in, Mom will grab the balls, the bat and the glove and smack the balls at her.

I think the dead period is an excellent opportunity for our young athletes to determine their own courses. For those girls who go play ball, it is a time to chill and relax; for those girls that want to PLAY BALL, it is a time to test their own commitment.

The dead period only lasts for a blink of an eye :)
