Has anybody else noticed the number of kids that UNC is recruiting. Out of the 2010, 2011, and 2012 classes alone they have 42 kids, and thats not to mention there is 4 classes at school every year and this is just 3 classes worth of players. And the 2009 class had around 15 kids as well. Unless they have 5 to 10 players sign pro each year, then starting next year there will be quite a few players cut.

I would guess that the #1 factor that UNC has to worry about is how many of their recruits might go pro right out of high school. The Heels have 15 signed from the 2011 class, and they probadly will lose a few of those. They've been hit hard before by the draft. Also, UNC will probadly lose some that choose to transfer elsewhere to get more playing time. Some of the Heels bench players could easily start elsewhere. Some may struggle with academics their first year. Just alot of things you have to factor in while recruiting.

This issue is a heck of a lot broader than any individual program. Here's why:

If a program expects to have a decent shot at playing deeply into the NCAA playoffs each year, they have to recruit players that are good enough to be draftable out of high school. Meanwhile, players are lost from the existing roster every year from a variety of sources: the draft, academics, injury, inability to contribute to name a few.

As a result, every coaching staff at a program of this caliber does their best to anticipate who will come, who will go, and who will stay. However, when the predilection of 18-21 year-olds combine with a number of uncontrollable factors, trying to maintain and live within the NCAA's prescribed 35-man roster can be a monumental challenge.

No Division I coaching staff that I know, UNC's included, wants to place itself in a position where it's forced to pare the roster because more come or stay than anticipated. At the same time, if they come up appreciably short because more don't come or don't stay, that's negative for the program, as well.

It's an unavoidable tightrope; one that's easy to come up on either side of.

I think all the top d1 schools bring in alot of kids, for many reasons
the following is from the LSU/Baseball web-site when talking about the 2010 roster:

The LSU veterans are complemented by a talented class of 19 newcomers, including eight players that were selected in the 2010 Major League Draft. LSU's incoming class was voted No. 1 in the nation in the annual Collegiate Baseball magazine recruiting survey.

    Prepster nailed it!

Putting aside the problems with transfers, injuries, grades and homesickness, I like to use Florida State as the example. Florida State is/was considered one of the premiere baseball schools in the country. However, Coach Martin's program got hurt going after the super players that it takes to win the college world series. He lost too many players each year to draft (and these are just the recruits; nevermind the current players they lost to the draft.) Realistically, he had no idea what type team he would have the following year until they arrived on campus.

He decided to take a different approach and go after kids with a higher degree of attending school....and the program slipped. It appears they are back to aggressively going after the best talented players again.

It's a very difficult juggling act for all the coaches at a powerhouse school, but what can they do---risk a chance of "under-recruiting?" The unique part about attending a school like UNC is different than most. First, Coach Fox gives everyone an opportunity to succeed. But because of competition that window of opportunity is smaller than at some other schools. You make your mark when you get your opportunity---or you don't. That's the way it is at every successful national contender (for that matter, I'd say most D1 programs are like that.)

The other part of attending a school like UNC that is unique. Even the players that don't start can get drafted.

analysis of recruiting class..the real story

Thanks for the current info on who's committed where. It might be difficult to do, but a real analysis would include an attrition study. Take the 2009 class. Using a similar list of those commitments, how many actually were on the roster of their college at the end of the 2010 season? Names not necessary nor instructive; just the numbers and percentages.
My guess would be 65% survival rate.
I would do but I do not have access to the data.

    Thanx

Good luck with that one. But if I gave an uneducated guess, I would say between 60-70% from class to class...and even higher at the D2 level (many have JV teams at D2.) Schools don't keep that kind of record. It would take an individual that follows a particular school.
