“Off Season” really means “Training Season”

    Batsandballs29,

I take your point or opinion respectfully. The post was for kids that have chosen to play to baseball only.

I grew up playing all three sports and each sport made me a better baseball player. Unfortunately those times have changed. The cost of college and the emphasis on scholarships has forced kids these days to choose a specific sport early. How many kids these days do you see going off to college to play two sports?

The athletes you have chosen to make your point is impressive. I played against Bo Jackson, Kenny Lofton and Dave Winfield. All tremendous multi-sport athletes and allstar baseball players; Winfield being a hall of famer.

So your opinion, which is what it is, has merit but it is not in line with the post. Nowhere in the post did I say multi-sport players shouldn't continue to play other sports. The post was meant for kids who are one sport athletes.

CBC I wasn't referring to your post at all. Mine was specifically in response to MClements. I thought I quoted him before mine. I apologize for the misunderstanding there.

Your post about taking time off to build strength dead on and I most certainly agree with it. From the standpoint of the kids who do choose to specialize, time off is a great thing. It gives them a time to reflect, devise a plan for things to work on in order to get better, get stronger and refresh before the season starts.

And your the reasons for choosing one sport are valid and very real points that many kids must consider.

I was simply referring to the mindset that many kids have drilled into their heads that playing one sport is the way to go and to totally avoid others because time spent working at the other sport will somehow prevent you from getting a D1 scholarship. i have a huge problem with that thought process.

if a kid chooses to play only one sport because that is the only one that they enjoy...FINE! i'm all for that. unfortunately i feel like too many parents, coaches, scouts, etc. force kids, in some way, to skip out on being a kid and becoming ATHLETES!

Again, my original post was not in response to yours at all. I completely agree with what you said in yours.

I also apologize for taking the thread off topic. I certainly didn't intend to. I let the one post drive my response when it had nothing to do with the original topic.

    Sorry again
