does this mean that the coach isnt paid?

does this mean that the coach isnt compensated for travel/hotel expenses?

Not many "non profits" I would say

If it's a true "non profit", 503-1C, they will be registered with the Federal Government as such, the government knows every move and there are tons of paperwork. Not the kind of hassle we choose to participate in. We have enough to keep up with already.

I would say that most are not "non profit".
We are "NO PROFIT". Most are just getting enough income from player fees to cover team expenses, ie, tournament fees, equip., ect...
There are a few self funded teams in the state. By that I mean, expenses are covered by business owners who happen to coach. That's how I played slowpitch all those years.

Some, like us, raise some funds from tournaments and in turn cover the those team expenses and help out our kids with some travel expense.

Some have paid coaches but I would venture to say most do not.

Some, like me and my guys, pay our own way and contribute to the cause when needed.

    Non profit vs Tax exempt

There is a lot of confusion between non-profit and tax exempt status..

    Non Profit Status
    Issued by the State
    No exemption from taxes
    Must file annual report
    Donations not deductible by donor

    Tax Exempt
    501c3 issued by the IRS
Exempt from Federal taxes (usual/customary income)
    Donations deductible by donors.

Any travel ball team should be setup as tax exempt, not non profit...

thanks Ric, this is what i believed it to be.

i know what you say about your organization is true, hats off to that.

but i'm amazed at how some try to throw the "non-profit" tag on ya to get you to assume that no one gets paid or "reimbursed".

if i have this right, "non-profit" organizations have to show a zero balance at the end of the fiscal year.......and they can do this in a variety of ways.

    true or not??

    Good subject

Most of us are non-for-profit! The Blues have always charged just enough to cover tournaments, some equipment, and let the kids pay their way to tournaments, etc. We do some fund raisers to assist when ever possible and have been lucky to have a few sponsors in our early years.
Just like Rick, most of us have spent many thousands of dollars out of our pockets to make sure all the kids got the chance to compete.
We looked into Non-profit status but the cost and the record keeping was just not worth the hassle. Most of the organizations for which I am familiar hold down cost and never plan to make a buck.
I do know a couple organizations where their founders/coaches make over $50,000 a year.

any job openings for that?? thanks rodney for the response. i know how hard it is to find sponsors. and i know most of the easy ones have been long gone. its tough work finding money. sometimes i guess its just easier to pull out the billfold and just pay for those kids, if its possible. it almost broke us, but i wouldnt change any of it......

    our team

The team my 12u plays on is tax exempt... They will take any type of donations and team secretary will write a receipt for any monies or equipment that is purchased for the team. We don't get a whole lot of money donations, but every bit helps. Most of the time its uniforms or batting helmets.

Here is a idea. Form your team as a church group which are tax-exempt. On Sunday morning have your team together for a short team service before you play. Invite anyone who wants to come, sing a song, read some scripture and discuss it, pass the hat and close with prayer. Give 10% of what you take in to someone else....... Team benefits, spiritually, mentally, financially and someone or team gets help also. Kids can learn even in softball about giving.

    Just a thought??????
