actually, high mounds allow you to throw harder and lower mounds allow the picher to throw with better control. The reason a pitcher seems like they are throwing harder in the bull pen is:

    They are fresh
They don't have to throw strikes
Poor conditioning shows once the game starts
Improper technique i.e., not bending properly - most kids today throw straight up and get tired early, i.e., after an inning or so.

Some people may have different opinions of "stay tall", but I suggest you ask this question in this thread: http://www.thisboardrocks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=175107.

It is from a well respected college pitching coach. He may be busy right now because of their season, but he checks this thread from time to time.

Yes, I'm a former pro and pitching coach. I'm retired now because I'm spending all my time trying to make money for the fam.

Standing tall usually means the pitcher is collapsing his back push off leg prior to driving forward, but many of the kids interpret this as "not bending their backs or front plant knee.

Collapsing the back leg causes the pitcher to become off balance and get under the ball. You'd like the boy to stay tall, drive off the back leg with good balance and then power forward - bending back and front plant leg. Most importantly, square up to the plate.
