Can someone explain why it became necessary for a teacher to become the head coach of any sport in high school? I really wish this rule could be changed.
    Thanks for your input.

They seem to be able to find "real" coaches for the boys sports such as football, but girls sports end up with what ever teacher has nothing better to do. This is why high school (mainly girls sports) are fast becoming nothing more than glorified rec ball.

    Teacher Coach

This is not a necessity in NC High Schools. We have more than one coach both boys and girls at our local High School who is not a teacher. Depending on the coach it can be a wonderful and rewarding experience for the athletes and their parents.

Unfortunately it works both ways. Depending on the coach it can also be a long and miserable experience for the athletes and their parents.

I see both sides of this. First it really bothers me that many (at least in my area) schools hire someone specifically to coach the major boys sports. In this area that would be: baseball, basketball and football. They may hire one coach that is specialized for a girl sport if you are lucky but mainly they just throw someone out there. This would seem to go directly against Title 9 but a hard thing to prove. Just seems more schools (systems) should put a little more effort into hiring teachers with experience in a sport if they are going to "make" them coach. But I also see that it is good for the school to put coaches in place and not let the parents run the athletics or then we are doing nothing more than "daddy ball" again. I see both occurring in girls sports more than any of us would like. I am lucky to work for a principal that hired teachers that had experience in a sport or they were at least willing to learn and work at the sports they were required to coach. Biggest problem I see in sports in general is what I have heard at several coaching clinics from very successful college coaches. "Today's kids (and this comes from their parents) know how to want, but they do not know how to work for what they want."

    I've seen

I've seen it this way. A teacher will take the job, however will then add 1 or 2 extra "Asst's" to help. The "asst's" will then work the team because they know the game better than the teacher. Asst will do all the play calling or giving signs and so forth. The Teacher/head coach answers to the AD..... It works and the teacher will gain knowledge, also from being a part.

Take a young teacher that has very little experience coaching softball, takes the job as HS head coach and then brings in his uncle that is retired and was a head SB coach at a college somewhere. The young coach learns and the uncle is doing what he likes to do. Teacher and girls both benefit. Ck some of the local HS sport programs that have volunteer coaches..
