    Watch out boys...
Told by an ump this week that a decision was coming from CH that would eject any player using an illegal bat and his coach. Umps are not going to check bats before games - though they have been for years for safety reasons! Why back off from that now? Supposedly they are going to AVOID looking at bats, until one is protested in the live game action, then they will check a sheet and eject player and coach.
[This was all one guy talking - but he is an ump... and admits nobody really seems to absolutely know what to do in all this.]

If this talk is accurate, my problems:
    1) Why not check bats pre game as always? If you know the rules (bats) take care of it ahead of time. Don't seemingly run from this.
2)Is that one of the "5 things" (or whatever the number is) listed in the rule book that can get someone ejected? Can someone in CH just mandate tossing folks? Oh, I forget, that's the same guy that told us two years ago at the state clinic/rules to call him if umps were in varying colors of grey pants and he," would handle them."

    Daggum... let's just swing wood.
I know a guy in Locust who can make us all bats!

Couple things wrong with your post. 1. Umpires are still checking bats prior to the game. We are checking for cracks, dead spots, etc. We are not checking for legal/illegal bats on the list. We have been told by the NCHSAA to ask coaches at the pre-game meeting, as always, if their players are legally equipped. 2. The NCHSAA cannot create a rule to eject the player and coach when an illegal bat is used. This would have to come from the NFHS since their rule book, which governs NCHSAA baseball, clearly states that a player using an illegal bat is out, not ejected.

    LSSU57,

I want to make sure that all understand my post was after a talk with an umpire. None of that was my doing. I definitely take you at your personal word.

However, at a scrimmage yesterday 2/26, not one bat was checked - and I was told by couple guys in blue they would not be doing it. And again, it was stated that they were "waiting for an email" from a certain gentleman in Chapel Hill that would be instructing them as to what to do in season - and again they reiterated the possibility of ejections. They must have heard that somewhere... though lots is being said. As for ejection, I AGREE that this could not be done if not in the NFHSA rule book. That was, in fact, my main point of conjecture.

Personally, I hope I don't know many coaches who will be calling "time" to have a bat checked. I don't think I know any who would be allowing there kids to use them - though I'm sure accidents happen.

I truly hope your representation is the way we will be going.

No problem here. I just know that when things are this foggy, wrecks often occur...

    From the NCHSAA

All umpires got this e-mail last week: "Pre-game, go to dugout and inspect all bats as we normally do for dents, flat spots, cracks, loose end caps, etc. After that inspection, go to the head coach and ask the following – “Coach, do all of your bats meet NFHS rule code?” Explain to him that he is responsible for the legality of all equipment. After he confirms compliance, play the game."

This is what CH is instructing umpires to do. If they are not doing it, they are not following the proper protocol.

Based on what I have read, all aluminum barrel BESR bats are legal this year.....at least is what it states on NCHSAA website. I just want to make sure that I am not missing something. I am assuming that main question is which composite bats make the cut.

Legal bats for 2011 are: Solid wood bats, Aluminum bats that meet the Ball Exit Speed Ratio (BESR) performance standard (aluminum barrel bats with composite handles), and Composite bats that meet the Ball Exit Speed Ratio (BESR) performance standard and have been re-tested and granted a waiver from the NFHS
