Wow...that's exciting. This is going to be a difficult season for you to balance. They have some athletes down in Hereford. Must be that great living on the water!!!!!

    baseball time with dad

    my favorite -

    Starclaire Little League

playing in the 1969 little league city championships @ dilworth - freedom park

the rest of the family went to myrtle beach

my dad had to stay home with me

with 4 brothers & sisters - i got little "solo time" with dad those days

    - he NEVER cooked a thing.
we ate out - every lunch and dinner for a week.

we won the city and went to Hamlet, NC for the States

Ironic- My son played in that league. Had a blast! In fact, many parents that had son's playing all played there growing up.

at one time Starclaire was a great org for baseball and football.
kids went on to play at South Meck and Olympic.
    - The famous RHINO kids played there.

i don't here the Starclaire name anymore
i don't know if the org even exists

Every summer since my oldest was in the 6th grade (soph in college now) my three boys have organized and played pick-up whiffleball in our yard or cul-du-sac. No coaches, no parents, no umpires, just pick up ball with made up rules and fun. They even had set teams with W & L records and standings. Competing everyday and just having fun, but learning the game instinctfully and not through someone telling them what they need to do. Even the kids who don't play organized baseball get involved and play.

It was truly enjoyable to sit on my deck and just watch the game be played just for the pure fun of it. Especially the home run derby.

Sandlot/pick up games seem to have gone away with changing times, but still somewhat survive around my house. Bats taped together, hunting in the woods for another ball, left handed gloves on right handed players and actually getting an out by throwing the ball at the runner.

"Baseball is the most over coached and under taught game in the world..." Branch Rickey. Not during the whiffle ball games at my house.

Playing against Mynderse Academy in sectionals and hitting a line drive off the pitcher's onions. I heard he pissed blood for a month. He was a mouthy SOB and got what was coming to him.

IT'S A BAD DAY THAT GOES BY AND YOU DON'T LEARN SOMETHING NEW!!

I have been around for longer than most, but I never heard them called "onions". Thanks for the education!!

    Mooresville vs East Rowan

My Sophomore year we were tied with East headed into the 8th inning. Hightower wanted to see a winner, seeing as how it was a Friday night, he let us play ball! Bases loaded, tie game. Line drive into deep left center. Kyle Phillips lays out over the shoulder and makes one of the greatest catches I've ever seen in the game. Next inning, I'm on third base with a 3-2 count with 2 outs and Josh Skidmore hits a line drive, home run that clears the foul pole by less than a seam.

Same year, 2 weeks later I'm on second base with 2 outs and a tie game. Josh Skidmore hits a line drive to center, I round third and head for home. Throw is on line and hits the catcher in the chest. Little bit of lucky timing and I manage to slide around the tag. Sliding around the tag to win the game and secure conference wasn't the best memory...slamming my helmet down, letting out a Spartan scream, and looking up to see every teammate in my face before I could even stand back up was the greatest memory. Seeing a team become more than a team in a few short weeks is something I'll never forget.
