Runner on 2B. Lefty slapper at plate. Slapper swings to hit (while moving toward pitcher), hits hard grounder to shortstop. Shortstop fields clean, drops ball, loses it between feet, finds then throws, just missing getting slapper out at 1b. Runner advances to 3B.

    Hit sac or error?

    Link to definitions on Scoring

There are so many questions all the time about what is an error and what is a hit. The rule applys the same to each batter whether they are a slapper or a power hitter.

If you want clarification on what an error is or can be, here is a link to the Major League Baseball Rules about scoring and what is an error, hit, interference, etc. Softball will not be much different from baseball when it comes to scoring.

In reality I think most posters are looking more for opinions than they are facts. Facts aren't fun. Facts come last--eventually.

It can be both a hit and an error. If the batter would have achieved 1st base regardless of the fielder, then it's a hit but the bobble allowed the R1 to advance to 3B, thus giving the error.

If the play would have been made on the batter regardless of the bobble, then it's just 1 error.

"ordinary effort" are the key words. If the player did not bobble the ball, should the out have been made?

    Interferance on the catcher.

Catcher, in her great haste to back up the throw at first, stepped on the foot of the aforementioned 'slapper', thus rendering 'slapper' a blubbering pool of tears as she wailed "why is it always me?!?!?!".

Coach of 'blubbering slapper' yells, "get up, Tubby!! She dropped the ball!!"

Blubbering, overweight slapper struggles to her feet and waddles on down the line as fast as her soccer-style rubber cleats can muster, catches her toe under the first base bag and sprawls face-first into the dust, although just after the throw from the butter-fingered short-stop.

    Safe at first.
