Question is it legal to pay players ? Saw on a ASA website where a coach was looking for players offering $500.00 plus all expenses paid if you would play 10 tournaments with him 12u team . Please share thoughts I am shocked ! I know some will stop at nothing but really !

If daughter plans to play collegiately do not take the money. If I remember correctly when my dd applied thru the clearing house for eligibility, one of the questions asked was have you received money to play softball.

    Amateur status

    Paid players are considered "professional".

NCAA rules do allow for a team to pay for some travel expense for the player without crossing the line between amateur and professional.

BTW, was this on the NC ASA site? What post, if so?

Why? Maybe we should ban some parents from parenting too.

    Hard Up!!!

I have a 99 daughter that is a very good pitcher and would never consider taking money from a team to play.I wouldn't want to put my daughter in that position or myself in that case. How do you think other parents and players would take this if the team still loses even if the pitcher did her job and the defense didn't.This is a time bomb waiting to blow up.I know times are tuff but come on!!!!

I would also say paying kids to play is flat wrong. However, reading the post on the NSA website makes me think: he basically states that fees, uniforms are paid and that the extra money can be used for other travel ball related expenses. Funds were rec'd from a sponsor. Many teams have sponsors to help with their fundraising. There are many teams that fundraise through many methods, be it sponsorships, sales, coin drops, etc., and split money earned among all players to be used for travel expenses or equipment, regardless if how much each individual contributed to the team fundraiser. Also, I know of a local "big" name team in my area where at least one player played for a much reduced amount and/or free(we were not on this team but some close acquaintances were). This was done for this player due to relative financial hardship. The team picked up the extra cost.
Are these fine lines? Is it basically the same thing under different names? Does it matter if the child that accepts this coaches advertised offer has a financial need for that assistance?
    Just thinking out loud...

Not enough info to be judging

I was gonna keep my mouth shut but AS USUAL, THE DANG THING WON'T STAY CLOSED.
I think the wording of the post could have been done in a fashion that would not have opened this can of worms.
I have had a couple of calls asking for my take on it, from folks that know the situation being discussed. From those conversations, I have come to realize that this coach should have proof read what he posted before he posted it.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with helping a kid, kids or familes out for travel expense.
Many teams are self sponsored, such as mine.
Many teams have business sponsors. We all look for ways of curbing the enormous expense we encounter.
I help the kids/families out when I can. I think we are called to help each other out.
Would you consider that "paying a player to play" or "paying for a player to play"?
What's the difference? I still take care of the players game expenses and sometimes travel expense.
NCAA has no rule against it. ASA has no rule against. God has no rule against it in fact he says we're supposed to help a brother/sister out when we can. So, as far as I'm concerned, it's ok!

Before we crucify someone on this board, would it not be better to find out all the info. I have sent word to this particular coach that he may want to revisit his wording in the post.

I hope one day we can all just get along. (don't see that happening, too many mean spirited people)
From what I see, over and over and over on these message boards, we are all just looking for someone to jump on about something, whether all the facts are there or not. In the future, I would hope that the ranting would be taken to the "Rant and Rave" thread and let's keep what's on here, something we can find useful or positive.
    I'm done.
