Home schooled students opted out of the free public education offered by the state of North Carolina under the state Constitution. With interscholastic athletics being a part of the total program of the public school, then imho if a family opts out of teh school, they opt out of the athletic program that is part of the school.

I think there may be some mis-information making the rounds. I have some familiarity with Charter Schools as they are currently run and I've never heard that a Public School Booster Club having to give up anything to a Charter School. Charters Schools have their own Booster Clubs and are fully able to raise funds for sports and extra-curricular things. Charter Schools as I understand it, don't even receive any county money, only state funds.

I'll believe this when I see it in print. It's too ludicrous.

Go to the NC General Assembly Website and read for yourself...

House Bill 253 entitled, Home Schoolers participate in School Sports, was introduced on March 9, 2011. To see it, use the link...

Hope this clears up some of the debate over whether or not it is a possibility.

Thanks coachevans26. I read it and it seems to apply to homeschooled student athletes. I did a search on Charter Schools on this particular documents and didn't find anything.

Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is because the parents are paying taxes. It's all just kids wanting to play sports. In metro areas, there are athletic programs for homeschooled students that allows them to play. Grace Academy in Matthews is one that comes to mind, although I'm sure there are others. It's not as simple for homeschooled kids in rural areas.

    Just my opinion.

Thanks again. I didn't see the part about the Booster Clubs, activity buses and such. No biggie. Besides, most of the charters schools I know of - Lake Norman Charter, Lincoln Charter, Kennedy Charter and Queens Grant all have their own sports programs and booster clubs. I'm certain there are charters schools with no sports programs, I just don't know their names.

Some CMS Magnet Schools don't have sports programs (NW School of the Arts is the one I'm thinking of) so those students are currently allowed to try out for their zoned school's sports teams. They don't always make the team. Were they good enough - maybe or maybe not. Team selection isn't always objective.

In CMS, there aren't as many JV softball teams as in the past. I see this as a good way to boost those programs. I also think it's good idea for emerging sports such as lacrosse and sports that aren't as popular as say, football, soccer, baseball and softball.

I suppose it's how you look at it.

Maybe I read this in the N&O, but I have seen it in print somewhere that this was being considered. Anyway, I do know I have read it in a reputable source somewhere though. It does bother me that I havent found it again just yet, when I do I will pass it on.
