we had this called on us a couple of years ago. defensive player has to have the opportunity to field the ball first, runner can go around back or jump over, but cannot interfere with the fielders opportunity to field the ball.

Not sure how its obstruction or why R1 got third if obstruction was the case. Unless 2 fielders were going for the ball and the umpire protected another fielder, but still doesn't explain why R1 was protected to third and not just second.

There has to be missing info!

Agree with rhughes... something is missing here.

Fielder has right to field the ball and runner must allow for that. Unless an action by 1B or P had an impact on this (deflected ball, muffed a play) and took the "protection afforded the first fielder, I'm not seeing it.

no more to it just a slow hit grounder to the second baseman and the ball and runner hit the second baseman at the same time , but the sad part was his partner behind the plate agreed with the call

Tough Luck, hope it wasn't a conference game.

Did the defensive coach get to watch the rest of the game?
If so, then kudos to the coach for not getting tossed.

At least it didn't affect the outcome.

I just can't understand how obstruction was ruled and even more so as to why the runner got a two base award on an infield play.

Did the umpire immediately call time or did s/he wait till after the play was over?
