    Weddington Warriors

    Weddington Warriors

I forgot to mention Alex Morales, the Warriors fine center fielder, who has signed with Pitt Community College. Morales has been a leader for Weddington in the field and at the dish. In addition, the Warriors have been bolstered by two freshmen Sean Collins (RF/P) and Daniel Calabretta (3B) who have played every innong for Coach Poole. No discussion of the Weddington Warriors would be complete without mentioning the outstanding work on the mound turned in by Colby Spivey. As I said in my earlier post, Weddington is solid from top to bottom.

    Team Profile (East Mecklenburg)

    East Mecklenburg Eagles

    Coach: Clinton Koppe– 2nd season
    2011 Record to Date: 10-7, 5-6 SW4A
    Top Players: Ian Ashworth-RHP (2012), Jonathan Crews-LHP/1B (Guilford), David Daniels-SS/C (Undecided), Jackson Reisterer-IF (2012), Logan Sherer-C/SS (2013), Lou Trosch RHP/1B (Guilford)

Season to Date: The Eagles are hoping to hit their stride in the CBC Classic after an up and down season to date. This Eagles squad boasts more power than any East Mecklenburg team in memory, but has struggled to string together timely hits in some big games. Of course, Coach Koppe's Eagles are always known for their pitching and defense. 2011 is no exception and the Eagles hurlers boast a team 2.88 ERA. In addition this Eagle squad has played together since they put on their first gloves for Sardis Little League and have unbelievable team chemistry. Simply put, these guys love playing together. As a result, East Mecklenburg is in the thick of the conference race in the always tough SW4A.

David Daniels and Lou Trosch enter their fourth year as Varsity starters for the Eagles. Coaches across the SW4A are eager for these two All-Conference perfomers to finally take their final bows. Daniels is hitting .475 and Trosch has a team low 2.3 ERA. Joining Trosch on the effective pitching staff are Jonathan Crews, Ian Ashworth, and Ben Leach, the MVP of last year's Classic. Jackson Reisterer (.372 BA) and Logan Sherer (.382) give the Eagles the home run production the Eagles have lacked in previous years.

Coaches Corner (with Coach Clint Koppe): "I am still waiting for us to play our best baseball. After the Classic we have a week and a half to get ready for the Conference Tournament and hopefully the State Playoffs. Having almost played an entire season, we are still looking for our identity. Maybe facing the stiff competition this week will help us take a step in that direction.
On a personal note, a lot of people think I am crazy for putting on an event like this. They say, 'it's your spring break, relax'. I simply say in return, 'watching great baseball at a place that I helped build is a vacation'. I love this game and enjoy watching these young men play the game and hope many of them will get the same opportunities that the game brought to me."

    Let the Games Begin!!

PLAY BALL! As you can see from the schedule posted above there are some big time match-ups to get this tournament started. Union County power Marvin Ridge meets up with the Vikings from North Mecklenburg to get things rolling at 11 AM. The Prime Time game at 7:15 PM features a rematch from last year's classic between East Mecklenburg and Weddington, won by the Eagles 7-6. Sandwiched in between are two games pitting the SW4A (Butler and Independence) against I-Meck (Hopewell and Hough), as the two conferences try to determine just who is the King of the Mountain in this neck of the woods.

CMS Interim Athletic Director Susan Doran sums it up best about the CBC Baseball Classic at East Mecklenburg, "Last season, the Spring Showcase at East Mecklenburg High School proved to be a
competitive event showcasing local teams in a superior baseball atmosphere. The teams committed to the 2011 Showcase should provide much the same excitement!"

    Be nice!

OK, that's no way to welcome our friends from I-Meck to the hallowed turf at Dave Jones Field!

And you Union County boys.....well, suggest you stay close to Lake Wylie and don't venture around Lake Norman during spring break! Nineteen runs in one inning....please tell me there were ZERO walks!

Butler - please note....High School baseball games are SEVEN innings!!!! You are going to have to start paying two entry fees! Umpires don't like FREE baseball!

Looks like the fun was happening on the East side today. Come on Sinker's....let's see some fireworks over there Wednesday.
