Bases Loaded, bottom of 7th, tie ball game, 2 outs. Batter comes up, hits grounder just past 3rd baseman...... all runners are advancing......as 1st baseman runs towards second he never makes it, running off the field in celebration.......Should he be out? Or did up make the right call and call him safe, allowing the run to score?

Bad baserunning: Don't count your chickens before they hatch

If the defensive team is smart they should throw the ball to 2nd base and get the force out to end the inning and negate the winning run.

southeast12, I do not understand the situation you described

You say "as 1st baseman runs towards second he never makes it........". What does the first baseman have to do with anything? Does he have the ball in his glove? Just confusing to me? Why is the first baseman running towards second??......:th_90edab00:

I'm thinking he meant the baserunner on 1st never made it to 2nd base.

That's correct....my apologies, I meant the 1st base runner ran towards 2nd base and never tagged it. He left the field of play. I believe, as the offense was celebrating, the defense threw the ball to 2nd base.........umpire made the safe call and allowed the run ending the game.

    Thanks for that........

I get it now. Anybody know, under the rules, how long the defense is allowed to make the play? Is this call protestable???:N1OopsHL::N1OopsHL:

    Naughty umpire

As long as the defensive team and umpires did not leave the field this call would be allowed and it would be legal. He should have been called out.

if he doesn't touch 2nd base and the defensive team does, then he is out...period. no time limit needed. that's a simple baseball rule.

the umpire made the wrong call, because it is a force out. if the defense tags any base before the runner gets there he is out.

it's no different than if it was a routine grounder fielded by the shortstop and thrown to 2nd base. if the out was made then the inning is over and the run does not score.

man i hope this is hypothetical and didn't actually decide the outcome of a game.

It was the outcome of the FV vs HS game last nite with the call going in HS favor. FV argued, to no avail. With the "right" call being made, game could have gone into extra innings. Who knows what outcome would have been. It's a shame a playoff game as well played as that, ended on a bad call.

But, it is over. It was a great game to watch. There was a huge crowd in attendance! I beleive there were spectators from all thru tri 9 conference, and then some, watching. Good luck to HS in their game tomorrow.

Had this happen maybe 20 years ago---Bases loaded ,two out bottom of the seventh. Batter walks but never goes to first. Does run count ?
