I was at game and I am the parent of MC Player. Very tough loss but I must say I am extremely proud of how kids fought back after being down 9-0 and to take lead 10-9 against a team of TC Caliber at their stadium. In defense of the coach I think the kid he intentionaly walked hit a grand slam when kirk first came in game and inherited bases loaded situation. I also think the same kid has like 13 homeruns on the year. Someone correct me if I am wrong please. We can second guess all day if it was the right call, Kirk was pitching well and not sure I would have walked him. I might have took my chances??? Bottom line if the catch is made in left we are praising MC Coach for one of the greatest comebacks in play off history but because play is not made in left he is a Goat. I really do not think we can blame him anymore than we can blame TC coach for giving up 9-0 lead. Just my opinion and I hated it for all the MC kids and wish TC good luck.

    it's a crazy game...

When a coach is trying to think strategically in the heat of the game, I doubt that he is factoring in to his decision-making the risk of a player dropping a routine fly ball. That possible outcome was not considered at that moment. When the ball was in the air the coach was a winner...when it hit the ground he is a loser (on the scoreboard), but not as a person or a coach.

I know parents are upset and their dreams of a title run were lost, but I can't reach all the way out to the conclusion that the coach blew the game.

I agree L&S. Coaches make decisions based on their gut. Some decisions may be unorthodox according to "the book", but nobody on that field understands their team and the other team better than the two coaches on the field. When it's time to make a decision the coach has a good feel for the game and what should happen. In this case he makes the right decision, gets what he wants, and the play goes the other way. I'm sure the MC organization understands that he is one of the reasons they made it that far.

MINCMI, that was a far bigger risk in the game you are speaking of (ND@AK). I couldn't believe it happened. The coach went off of a gut feeling, it worked, AK won the state championship that year.

The risk of facing Tyler Hanover, who numour times that season had hit walkoffs in that situation, was higher than puting the winning run on via IW. That decision was made before the game was even played if the situation came up. It was not a gut feeling but part of the game prep as they thought they could attack the next hitter successfully.

Wow "man", you never cease with the over-the-top critical comments.

You do realize this was not Ragsdale - right?
    (Inside reference to past post.)

Anyway, if you you notice the post above that states the intentionally walked player may have had a grand slam earlier in the game (CAN SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM OR REFUTE) and many previous homeruns on the season, then it may not have been stupid to any degree, much less insanely. Regardless of that, though we are all mindful of not attacking or blaming a kid in this situation, it sounds like... well... just get off the coach's back. It gets really uncomfortable carrying dead weight.

Oh - I am always going to others' games so that I can try to pick up something to better myself and my program, so please let me know what team you coach so that I can come learn a few things. That is, if you coach...

Apologies to all others for the rant. Coach bashing strikes a nerve.

Will new bats change the need for Intentional Walks??

With all the discussion around the MC game, just wonder what you guys think about the new bat rules for 2011-2012. Will this help diminish the need to Intentionally Walk batters? It gets frustrating watching kids who have worked so hard to get to this level - only to see them get intentionally walked any time a runner is on base in a playoff game.

Sad for the great high school hitter...

I talked to 2 stud high school catchers this weekend and they both told me they were walked about 30 times this school year as senoirs. What a shame!

    Stretchlon...what do you suggest??

Do you suggest rule changes to disallow intentional walks? You are right, it is a shame for the really clutch hitters. I would love to hear some proposed remedies.
I feel sure coaches are already following the studs with their next best in the order.:singer::REDanceBanana011:

What is the shame of it?
Were they all intentional? I doubt that.
If so, it shows great regard for their ability.
It is a team game. Losing to one player would be foolish.
As a coach, you have to make someone else beat you at times.

Their coach could bat them lead-off.
I batted a 6'5" 250 lb. monster in the 2 slot one year.
If my lead guy was on, and they chose to walk the monster in the first, we were basically up 1-0.

    Strategy.
    Thinking.
    Not a shame.
