Wanted to share a great play I saw this past Friday night. Mallard Creek was at Roberson in the 3rd round of the state play-offs. MC fell behind 9-0 and rallied and came back and tied the game and forced extra innings, "free baseball". MC went ahead in the 8th by a 10-9 score. In the bottom of the 8th, with runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs, the LH batter for Roberson hit a major league height fly ball down the left field line. The left fielder was shaded to center and had a long run to get to the ball. If he catches it, game over. As I watched him he slightly over-ran the ball and it dropped just fair, with both runners scoring and Roberson winning the game 11-10. The game was full of good plays and alot of emotion, 2 comebacks, etc. Then came the best play I had seen all year. All of the players for MC were sitting/laying on the field in disbelief and distraught/heartbroken with the outcome, including the leftfielder as Roberson celebrated as you would expect. My son had played this past summer and fall with the Dirtbags and Mikal Hill, who was on this MC team and why I came to the game to watch. As parents, fans, etc screamed and cursed, some cried, and some blamed players, coaches, etc. I continued to watch the players on the field as I had no real dog in this fight. What I then saw was Mikal Hill and his teammate, the third baseman (don't know his name), get up after about 10 seconds, run out to their crestfallen teammate in left field, and help him up and run with him into their dugout. As the adults around struggled to cope with what had occurred, these 2 young men made me proud of who and what they stand for, and for the future of our country. Our young people get alot of bad "rap" out there, but these two showed why I feel our young people are great and our country will be in great hands in the future. Congrats to Mikal Hill and his MC teammate on what I consider to be the "best play of the year"

    Just for the record............

Just for the record, the other player was Mallard Creek's golden glove third baseman, John Murray..:SCA+HL:

I was there on the TC side and I noticed the very same thing, great compassion for their teamate and shows what class young men they are.

    Great story.

Best "play" I saw this spring was a heartbreaker but it showed the grit and intensity of a great player. Middle Creek and Green Hope were tied 1-1 in the Bottom of the 11th at Green Hope. Middle Creek first baseman Britt Cherry (Wake Forest football recruit) made an incredible attempt at a rocket between him and the 2nd baseman. One of those ropes where you don't give anyone in the infield a chance. Cherry knocked the ball down and proceeded to attempt to throw the runner out. The throw was off the mark/nobody was covering and Middle Creek loses 2-1. Britt and MC didn't win that day but it's a play that stuck in my head all year and I will always remember the emotion from him when he got up and brushed himself off. It wasn't about almost making a great individual play, it was about him walking off the field on the wrong end of a 2-1 ballgame against a rival. He's a true team played who will do well at Wake Forest.

And I also saw a clinic put on by Alex Raburn at 3rd Base in the 1st Round of the 4A Playoffs at Durham Jordan.
