Best 4A baseball conference in NC?

There have been plenty of talk about the best conference in NC on this board throughout the years. Here is a little number analysis. Conference percentage is based on advancing to the next round in the playoffs for the years 2007-2010. (I am sure there are minor mistakes, but these are as accurate as I was willing to make it based on NCHSAA records for the past 4 years.)

MIDEASTERN .690 29-13

GREATER NEUSE .167 4-20

SOUTHEAST was new in 2010 and is at 3-4. The COASTAL had Rose and NEW BERN as its only 2 teams and they both were guarenteed the playoffs before the season. Still 12-5 over three years is impressive (Thanks in large part to Rose's Championship in '08).

I-MECK .375 3-5, PIEDMONT TRIAD .667 8-4, MEGA .250 1-3, SOUTH CAROLINA .600 3-2, MAC .750 6-2 conferences were formed in 2010, so I did not include these above as it was only 1 year.

Here is what stood out to me looking at the brackets over the past 4 years:

1) Mideastern Conference (Wilmington teams - now includes Rose) has been great! Honestly, the most dominating numbers and with several teams who have made deep runs in the playoffs.

2) Southwest Conference (Charlotte) is the best conference in the west (I know...Duh!) , led by Ardrey Kell's success. Other team's have also made deep runs in the tourney as well.

3)While the Central Piedmont has a close percentage to the SW, it is primaraly due to the success of one school, North Davidson. I really did not realize how good they have been for so long now.

3) Cap-8 was also very impressive! There success is based largely in part to Sanderson and Leesville Road. Milbrook did have one good year, but it is obvious SHS and LRHS have led the way.

4) The Tri-9 Conference many rave as the East's best from time to time is just over .500, but have had multiple teams make deep runs (Middle Creek, Apex, Holly Springs, Lee). I think many Raleigh area folks also give them credit for the run of state titles and appearances the conference made in the early 00s AD played for 'ship, while Lee, F-V, & Apex won back-to-back-to-back titles.

5) Hate to be negative at all, but the Greater Neuse, PAC-6, & Queen City have horrible numbers and the Midsouth, Big South, and Meca Conferences are not too far behind.

I had thought abuot including this year, but I hate to do that since it is not over. Just some numbers for you to toss around when you are talking about your conference in the future.

 

3A Numbers

Very interesting. Would you have the time available to do the same thing for the 3A conferences?

........ for some reason, most kids that go on to D1 schools come far and away from the Charlotte area. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! I wonder why that is. Could have to do with the abundance of showcase competition.

baseball411...CPC has a lot to do with West Forsyth too. They were the powerhouse of that conference in the late 90's and early 2000's and still are a force in that conference. They contend for that title year in and year out and usually are a 3rd round team or farther.

 

If you go back to 2000 things may be al LITTLE different. West Forsyth went to the finals in 2002 and final 4 in 2005. Just saying!!! ha ha
alot has to do with how the pairings of the first rounds are also. the CPC has to go to charlotte about every year, so they knock each other off in some early rounds. great info. eagles

 

Based on the last 4 years (and that alone) the great percentage that the CPC has is really based on North Davidson as I stated. West Forsyth is 2-4 over the 4 year period I was looking at. With that said, WF is a very solid and well coached program, they just have had some tough luck in the playoffs (strictly looking at results) over the past 4 years and I'll stick by my statement that North Davidson at 13-4 helped the CPCs percentage tremendously. To further the case with data, the CPC would is 12-15 (.444) without ND and wouldn't even be in the "best 4A conference" discussion. It would be great to go back farther, but 1)the NCHSAA site doesn't have all of the results before 2007 and 2) it took a couple of hours to put together the data for four years, I surely do not have the time to do 20 years...if someone does have the data and time I'd love to see it though.

 

Sorry DLG, probably won't. NCHSAA.org has all of the results from the past 4 years and you can search to find members of the conferences for those years too...set aside 2-3 hours to do it though.

 

Statements like this is one reason I went through the playoffs to have documentation when people ask about the best conferences around. A very interesting perception you have, but I wonder if reality and data would back up your thought. I guarentee you that I could come up with data proving the statement you made is far from the truth. Hopefully you could come up with data to back up your point, especailly since it is NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! You certainly can manipulate the stats to show what you'd like them too...

Oh well, looks like my next project for another rainy day.

 

I think a great way to settle this is to have a all conference tournament. Instead of state games play tournament round robin style and find the best conference from each division 1a 2a 3a and 4a and then have those four teams play for the best overall. I think i would be better than state games. And just as fun to watch. plus a great way for recruiting.
