Deep fly ball is hit to center field. Center fielder gets to the fence (temporary fence), jumps and makes the catch in the air, but lands on/over the fence. What is the ruling, home run or out?

When my daughter made exactly this play on the 2008 world series it was called for an out. Last year I saw a similar situation and it was called a home run as contact was made, after the catch, outside of the field parameters.

Great question! (As a side note, can't we all agree to 1 rulebook?!). In this case I will say NSA, but curious to see if there are different rulings from other organizations.

When you say "lands on/over," those are two very different places.

If she hits the inside of the fence, knocks it over, and lands on that, then, in most codes, we have an out. If she then rolls, or stands up, beyond the fence into dead ball territory, we have "catch and carry" and any baserunners are going to get free bases.

If, on the other hand, she hurdles the fence cleanly and lands in Dead Ball territory, the wicket becomes much, much stickier.

I wish we could use one rule book, but there are differences in each rule set so it is important to know which one for accuracy.

    NSA, I am not sure.

ASA says the temporary fence is an extension of live ball territory if it is knocked over while NFHS says if a fence is knocked over it becomes dead ball territory.

NFHS if the fielder leaps the fence neither foot can be completely over dead ball territory before the catch and no other part of the body can be touching anything in dead ball territory.

The OP needs precise info to give a ruling.

    I hate temporary fences.

Is not the recommended fence height 8 feet?
