Should be a great series. Cherryville hosts the first game and Queen City comes in riding a 13-game win streak. I hope both teams are at full strength and the evening thunderstorm pattern takes a break!

Queen City plays its' home games at Jack Sink Field on the campus of Myers Park HS in Charlotte...easy to get to off Woodlawn Road exit from I-77, about 3-4 miles east, I guess.

Yes, game two is Monday night at Jack Sink...game one is Sunday night in "Chura-ville". Queen City played at the Cherryville stadium on Friday night after being rained out at Jack Sink, then traveling to No. Lincoln (washed out) and then on to Cherryville (washed out after 6 innings with QC leading 6-4 to end the series).

    Cherryville takes game one...

    Queen City...010 000 202...5..11..2
    Cherryville....002 020 04x...8..14..2

Cherryville hosted the opening game of one Area IV semifinal and it was a well-played and close game until the bottom of the 8th inning when Cherryville broke it open. Earlier, Tyler Powell got the Mustangs on the board with a towering HR to straightaway CF and the lead flipped to Cherryville in the next frame when they plated two runs on an RBI groundout and an RBI single by Trey Drury. Drury hit a bomb in the 5th inning with one aboard to make it 4-1 and the Mustangs were frustrated by back-to-back innings leaving the bases loaded. Bryce Bradley and James Snover had RBI hits for the Mustangs in the 7th inning to make the score 4-3. The crowd of over 350 folks was looking for a close finish, but that was not to happen as Cherryville erupted for four runs in the bottom of the 8th inning by bunching two errors, two singles, two intentional walks, a double, and a sac fly to extend their lead to 8-3. Queen City battled back in th 9th and scored two runs, but fell short with the rally and the game ended 8-5 in favor of Cherryville. Lou Trosch was the tough-luck losing pitcher as he suffered some unearned runs. Trey Drury picked up the win in relief.

Cherryville leads the series 1-0. Game two is Monday night at Jack Sink Field on the campus of Myers Park HS in Charlotte.

    Winning Pitcher: Trey Drury
    Losing Pitcher: Lou Trosch

Great game last night. But I think the winning pitcher was Adam Benfield. He pitched seven innnings and left with the lead. Not sure how the official scoring works but I think he would be the winner. Looking forward to tonights game.

    pitcher of record

Benfield left with a 4-3 lead. Drury pitched the 8th inning and then Cherryville scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. QC scores 2 runs in the top of the 9th to make the score 8-5. Drury was the pitcher of record when the winning run (6th run) scored so he is credited with the win.

It was announced incorrectly at the conclusion of the game.

But since QC never tied the game that makes Benfield the WP. Atleast that is how I understand it. Imop

    hmmm...

Sumo...you may be right, but I found this at scorekeeping.wordpress.com (content from website in bold)

Determining Winning, Losing, and Saving Pitchers

Every game of baseball has a winning and a losing pitcher, and some will have a third pitcher who gets credit for a save.

Finding the winning pitcher can be simple in most cases, but more difficult in others. In some games it may even be a judgement call on the part of the official scorer.

Generally the winning pitcher is the pitcher of record on the winning team when the winning run is scored. The winning run is one more than the number of runs scored by the losing team. For example, if a team wins 7 – 3, the winning run would be one more than three, so in this case four.

Following this guidance, Benfield met the 5 inning rule, left with the lead, but the winning run (6th run, one more than QC scored) was scored in the bottom of the 8th inning when Drury was the pitcher of record.

Separately, I saw an entry on another site that said if the starting pitcher pitches at least five innings (9 inning regulation game) and leaves with the lead and his team never surrenders the lead then the starter is the winner. That being said that would mean a starter that meets the 5 inning rule, leaves the game ahead 5-3 and his team never surrenders the lead but ultimately wins 20-19, the starter is the WP...that seems strange to me.

Benefield may be the winning pitcher - but Drewery would definitely be the "winning HITTER". The kid can really swing the stick. Fun to watch him hit.
