2 outs runner on first, batter hits line drive that hits runner. Runner is ruled out. What do you put in the book for the batter?

    HIT !

That is the answer to a famous hypothetical question about a no-hitter being lost in the 9th inning when a four-hopper catches the heel of the runner who had just walked....

Fielders choice...i believe the fielder nearest the runner hit is credited with the putout.

The batter is awarded a hit when a fair ball touches a runner or an umpire. The ball is immediately dead at that point. The runner is out HBBB (hit by batted ball) if he was not in contact with a base and the fielder nearest to the runner is credited with the put out.

The only excpetion is if the batted ball was ruled to be an infield fly, then both the batter and the runner would be out.

That sounds pretty rulebook mincmi so we'll go with it...infield fly makes for interesting situations

The runner is out for interference when hit by a fair batted ball, even if he is on the base, unless IFF is in effect.

This applies in all cases except when the ball has already passed through or by (within reach) of a fielder, AND no other fielder has a chance to make a play on the ball.

Sorry to jump in here with my first post on this forum, but I really want to see more folks know these rules so the games are less confrontational when these situations arise...

This should be interesting considering Mincimi is a professional scorekeeper. I'm sure he will have a response.

By the way, welcome to the board, T Thomas. I hope you can keep us informed on what's happening around Waynesville

    Thanks for the welcome.
I actually found this forum through a link on hsbbw. It looks pertty good so far, and I'm looking forward to catching up. (mostly just read everything and lurk, so you won't see me post a lot...)

I'm just starting this journey - my son is 10 and he's playing LL All-stars right now.

As for the rule, here is a paste from OBR:

After 9 years there are many threads. I would recommend that you use 'Search threads" and put in a topic that interests you. We have had all kinds of baseball people from MLB scouts to HS and college coaches participating, so there are many interesting threads and replies.
