I know this is a stupid question but I'm having a senior moment. And I also know that there is no stupid questions only stupid people that have questions. So here i go...

With a runner on first and a line drive one hops the right fielder and the right fielder guns a throw to second in time to force the out at second. Is the batter awarded a hit or is it a fielders choice? Now of course i know if it's a ground ball in the infield and the runner is forced at second it's a fielders choice but a sharp line to an outfielder?

Somebody help me here and why don't I know this?

Happens in LL all the time at 2nd base!

Unfortunately for the batter it is recorded as a fielder's choice by scoring rule. I as a coach have always put it in my book as a hit with an explanation.

If at the high school level, this is a problem. Yes, the player hit the ball hard and it should have been a hit......but when the rule says FC, then it is charity scoring to GIVE the player a hit. That kind of thinking leads to .650 batting averages.

Do you take a hit away if they tap one between P and 3B or if they are sac bunting and it is such a good bunt that all are safe? That is why college coaches say they don't even want HS stats.
