New State Championship Format

shouldn't the BEST 2 teams play for the championship, regardless of what region they are from? ????

 

Not if you want to break it out into East vs West. That would be like two National League teams in the World Series.

 

In what college or pro sport does that happen?

 

I think that is the beauty of high school and college sports. They should leave it alone. Let keep Cinderella at the ball!

I suppose most college or pro sports championships are seeded. makes a difference.

 

I guess I was asking from the players standpoint. The old system allowed twice as many girls to experience the state finals. I don't think the number of games in 2 days is an issue considering many of these girls play TB and play way more games in a weekend than this.

I can speak as a fan that it breaks my heart. Not only could I catch all 4 classifications at one site, I also got to see great teams. This year all 4 of the 4a teams were stout in my opinion. I enjoyed watching them. I just know now for those of us living in the east we will not get to see some of the better teams from the west (1 in each classification) and will probably only see 1 or 2 classifications as they will be spread out. Again this is from a fan's viewpoint.

 

And so are HS sports... but even Pro or College have a final that is east vs west, conference vs conference or something similar where the final is the first time the teams meet each other in the tournament.

 

For this year, the final series for all classifications will still be held in the pastur... I mean the Creek.

Many TB teams play at the Creek without issue. I haven't seen the fields cause any more problems than many other fields. Especially compared to the fields we had to use during the State Games a couple years ago around Charlotte. Mallard Creek, I believe is the name, was definitely much worse than Walnut Creek. There was a little pond there that collected foul balls throughout the tournament.

 

I don't know about Mallard Creek and the State Games, but the fact is that Walnut Creek is a men's slow pitch facility that is not even maintained to a minimum standard. It is nowhere close to being a proper fastpitch facility. Poor lighting, poor field conditions, incorrectly sized infields, and cheap temporary fences become factors in the game much too often. More than one team has lost a championship because of unusual factors created by the field! I've seen a ton of high school facilities all over the state. Inside the fence where it counts, Walnut Creek ranks in the bottom 10%. For a high school kid, the opportunity to play for a high school state championship is extremely elusive. Our athletes should be able to play for their championships on first class fields that are designed for fastpitch.
