How should coaches handle situations were the players want to go on vacation or on a senior class trip and miss games during sping break or Easter tourney games? Some parents seem to not care about the team and take an important player away during these games. What to do?

This is what some call a lay up. See ya. Adios. Sayonara. Au Revoir. You gotta find out about character before it comes to this.

There is a backup player hoping the kid in front of him goes on vacation.... he's thinking, in the words of George Jefferson, "Movin' on up....

    Family Vacation...

WHAT????? Folks take family vacations during Spring Break? Never would have figured.
You have to think about your teammates before yourself. Just a thought.

    Be proactive.

Coaches should layout expectations to players and parents before the season. If a coach expects players to be at practice and games during the spring break period, then lay those expectations out as one of the criteria for team membership before the season begins.

No coach can prevent any student from going on a spring break or family vacation. However, by stating you expectations for being a member of the team before hand, the coach has put the decision on the player (or family) long before the spring comes. If they want a spring break trip, they cannot be a member of the team from the start.

For any serious player, this is an easy decision and is a non issue. For those that do not follow stated expectations: see aguyyouknow's response.

This is one of the many ways the "players" get separated from the "pretenders."

Not only players, but programs too.

    Absolutely.

By the way, thank you, once again, for a tremendous pre-season write-up on the conference.

It was never an issue at the high school my son attended. The Coach discussed expectations in the meeting prior to the first day of tryouts. No commitment, no spot on the team. Its all about priorities, those who put baseball first in all but the most important of events, are usually the best team mates. We've taken more baseball vacations than I can count and will continue to do so until my boy plays his last game. But for those who truly love the game, in our minds, do we really have a choice?

Just not sure how enjoyable that trip could be knowing you may have let your teammates down. Spring Break is overrated and kids at that age need to understand that.
