    Olympic

Olympic doesn't have much depth but they are led by senior Jamie Dey. His work ethic and his experience (from playing for Stealth Showcase over the past few years) has him as one of the best kept secrets in Charlotte. He'll hold his own on the mound. When you get into a one game playoff, Jamie allows Olympic to compete.

While I agree that CCD's field is one of the best, IMO, they missed big time with the short fences. Same issue at Providence. East Meck has my vote as one of the best all around fields in the area.

Now that gives me an idea! I might just put a contractors tape to all of them in the area and publish it on here....down the lines, power alleys and dead center. That would give everyone an accurate reference point....maybe a 2012 project.

I think Country Day is 322' down the lines and 360' to center with an 8' fence (seems kind of average to me)...longest HRs I ever saw there (over three years) were Wil Myers vs. Charlotte Christian in the 2009 state playoffs and Sam Fulginiti from Christian vs. Country Day in 2009 in extra innings....left fielder said it hit the pitchers mound on the adjoining practice field on the fly.

Philly...maybe you were thinking of Charlotte Christian on Sardis Road....kind of short to RF & RCF power alley.

I think the grooming and extra care make a big difference when you see a great ballfield, be it East Meck or Country Day or others....BTW, here is a comment posted on TBR from Coach Woodard from the UNC Tar Heels after conducting a camp at Country Day just last week, "Coach Hennessey and Coach Smith have a first class program in place at Charlotte Country Day School. The facilities were immaculate". A lot of credit has to go to former Country Day head coach, Ed Walton who continues to tend to the field, often rescuing games from being called by lightly turning the infield surface after a heavy night's rain to speed up the drying and them smoothing it back to perfection by game time.

Google earth has a way to measure that seems to be very accurate(up to a few ft). I assume myers park has biggest field 340 ish on corners and 401 up middle. Be interesting how many fly out of there w bbcore. I have heard fence has been hit a few times w 8 mans and open fields but nothing over.

I would love to see a chart of all the fields dimensions. IMO it would tell a lot of why and where the power is coming from. Maybe I am wrong (and God knows I am a lot) but I recall the fences (been more than a couple of years since I have been there) were very short then. 360 feet to center is not long with some of the studs I've seen play lately. I stand corrected if not.

    Olympic - can they compete?

Can Olympic compete? Not so sure they can. Hoping to see Jamie Dey play this year. Another senior is Tyler Byrnes who was all-conference as a freshman. We'll just have to see.

Development is key, but do i have it correctly that several former Trojans are playing elsewhere? (I spoke with a gaston sportswriter who expressed his frustration with this general characteristic of charlotte sports... everchanging rosters.. players going to private schools or moving makes prognosticating difficult).

One thing i can tell you. Olympic basketball is worth seeing this year. I just watched them beat Garringer 103-50? There were 8 to 10 dunks. Their press, ball pressure, and passing, perimiter shooting was incredible. Allerek Freeman (#30) put up four 3-pointers in the first quarter. Transition is solid, and they can breakdown a defense. They weren't perfect on execution, but were impressive from warmup to buzzer. Ok, it was a 6-0 olympic vs 0-5 Garringer. But they've already beaten Butler and Meyers Park.

It's coaching, coaching, coaching. The preparation and attention to detail was significant. Baseball coaches are you hearing me. Excellence is not accidental.

very interesting. funny how Providence catches all the attention for being so small when East is about the same. All others very close except myers park extremely deep up the middle 402(1 ft deeper than Turner Field)
