10u Travel Baseball Team, Holly Springs

Does anyone know good 10 year old players looking for a travel baseball team? We are a 10u travel baseball team in Holly Springs, and part of the Wake Wildcats group of travel teams. We are also convenient to Cary, Apex, Fuquay, Angier, Willow Springs, New Hill, Southern Garner and Cleveland Schools Road areas. We play about every other weekend from March through June, except on holiday weekends. Most games are local or in locations within about 20 to 40 minutes drive. We have private winter indoor cages and good facilities. Our 10u team is beginning spring scouting efforts now to add one to two new players. Experience in advanced level baseball (Select/Allstars/Travel) is preferred but not required. Great opportunity to develop with a team from the start.

If you have or know of a good 10u baseball player looking for a new team, please contact Coach Rob at [email protected] or call (919)740-0039 for details/tryouts.

    Thank you

    I know, I know...
We've beaten this horse to death and drug it around through the streets - etc.

    But do you see this?
"Our 10u team is beginning spring scouting efforts"
    Really? Scouting 10 year olds...

"Experience in advanced level baseball (Select/Allstars/Travel) is preferred"
Huh? Experience? In advanced baseball - at 10?

Good/bad, agree/disagree - no matter what, I don't see how anyone could defend this as anything other than recruiting of 10 year olds.

Dear Lord, save us from ourselves. Seriously and literally Lord.

[For those I will offend (maybe the Coach Rob here), please take my word that this is NOT personal. I don't mean to ridicule any one individual. I assume your intention is to do a good thing with and for kids. The whole process is just out of control - In My Opinion... which I understand is probably not anything for others to lose sleep over.]

    Not Offended

I am glad you posted this to give me a reason to explain my approach to coaching. I have actually lost good players because parents thought I was not tough enough on the kids. One parent recently told me the kids should come home exhausted after practice, and that it's time to train them like a high school work out. Her child will hate baseball by the time he is 13 (or sooner). I left a big travel baseball association because of pressure to be a youth baseball factory, primarily focused on winning tournaments.

Travel Baseball simply means that a team travels to different locations near or far, and they are not tied to a recreational baseball league in a single community. They also stay together rather than break up and start over each season. It's advanced sports for kids who have a talent and wish to develop it. I have heard this argument before and it's usually made by people who have never been involved. Travel sports can be ridiculous, but you can't lump all coaches and parents into one category.

Kids start practicing many types of advanced sports at very early ages - consider gymnastics, hockey, ice skating, etc. If a child shows talent playing the piano, singing or painting works of art, you would be insane not to develop it. If a child is particularly intelligent and advanced in school, would you suggest that the parents and teachers back off and let the child be bored and average? The opportunity is not the problem, some parents just take it too far. I have seen parents yell at their kids, even yell at other parents' kids. The kids on my team learn advanced skills and mechanics that will help them as they reach High School baseball. However, I make it a point to mix learning with having fun - we end every practice with 30 to 45 minutes of fun play. The kids have a great time, they don't want to leave, and they can't wait to come back.

So, if a parent of a 10 year old baseball player would like their child to step up from Allstars, or if a parent has a child on a travel baseball team but is not happy with the stress and pressure placed on their child, please check us out. We play to win when it counts, but developing all players while creating lasting friendships and great memories is our top priority.

    Thanks,
    Coach Rob

    Fair enough Coach Rob.
You bring good points in terms of analogy to arts, etc.
Also, your approach seems more even-keeled (sp?) than many.
I wish you all the best in your endeavor.
