I was at the Gastonia Ashbrook vs North Lincoln game Saturday. The game went
9 innings with Ashbrook winning 3-2. I had to leave in the top of the 8th. I was later told that the Ashbrook pitcher went all 9 innings and threw 183
pitches. Does anyone know if this is TRUE ?.

That is a ton of pitches for such a low score. Were they leaving bases loaded every inning?

I agree it does seem like alot of pitches especialy as you stated the 3-2 score.
While there seemed to be alot of 3-2 counts and what also seemed to be about
normal balls fouled off I don`t remember an abnormal amount of runners left
on. I will say this early in the season 9 innings seemed to be a little long to leave
the kid out there. When I was told the final pitch count I found that hard to be-
live so I was asking if by chance anyone knew for sure what the real story is.

North Lincoln sent 34 batters to the plate, so an average of 5 pitches per
batter gives you 170. I find that to be alarming !

Its time for the NCHSAA to step up and determine what's an acceptable pitch count per game, because obviously some coaches can't make that determination with the players interest in mind... IMO a hundred is the ceiling per outing with 3 days rest. A college or major league coach wouldn't allow it and for good reason... its stupid! Imagine what both of those kids arms felt like the next day and even today?

There isn't a "set number" rule, because you depend on folk using common sense. Ex: IMO 100 is entirely too many for early in the season, but 100 may be ok in June-July.

    great article

This article is one of my favorites that describes the inner forces of the pitching motion (after you get into the meat of the article)...specifically speaks to the effects of fatigue and bad mechanics ultimately leading to arm injury....lots of references from scientific studies and scouting perspectives on pitching motions that have higher chances of costly breakdowns. Be sure to read all 5 pages if you find the article interesting.....
