These two teams scrapped well against one another tonight--fun to watch kids compete this way--conference play every pitch counts!!!

This was a well-played game between North Mecklenburg cross-town rivals. Brandon Gragilla was the story of the game as he followed up very strong pitching performances against the Charlotte powerhouse programs of Providence and Ardrey Kell with another stellar outing. He had the Hopewell hitters stymied and made big pitches when he needed them. In the first inning, Hopewell's leadoff batter, Cam Underwood, stroked a sharp liner into the LF corner for a standup double and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Inexplicably, Underwood broke for the plate while the pitcher was returning to the mound and wound up getting tagged out on a hustling play by Hough third baseman, Greyson Oxidine. Gragilla later pitched out of a jam with runners in scoring position and no outs by deftly working the corners and changing speeds masterfully.

The lone Hough run was scored by Jared Sobo (2-4 batting) who scored from first on an RBI double driven by Nick Daddio (UNC-Charlotte) into the far reaches of the ballpark. Hough had another rally squelched by Joe Bertone (UNC-Wilmington) who came in to pitch in the 7th inning with two runners in scoring position and two outs. A sharp grounder up the middle was knocked down by Bertone who then smothered it behind the mound with a sliding move and throw to first to beat the runner by a step...saving two runs and giving Hopewell a chance in the bottom of the 7th. Bertone retired the hitter on his first pitch, so fans were not treated to seeing his "Viper" pitch tonight, but I saw it in his warmups and it was impressive. Eric Siler made some nifty plays at SS for Hough including a nice play on a slow chopper in the 7th to help Gragilla close things out.

Hopewell lost a lot to graduation, but their play was impressive tonight....

Brad Stone takes perfect game into top of 7 and has tough luck walks and an unfortunate error on double-play ball leading to the lone Indy run.

Still a no hitter for the NC State commit.

The scouts were out to see Alabama commit Keaton Haack tonight but Ragsdale spoiled his outing with the big win to stay undefeated.

Haack pitched well but he was greeted by Ragsdale first baseman Kyle Morrison who took his first pitch of the second inning over the 375 sign in center field to stake Ragsdale to 1-0 lead. Ragsdale got two on second and third with no outs thanks to some shoddy fielding by NWG (their defense kicked it around a lot tonight) but Haack struck out the next three to ruin a big inning.

Soph left hander Matt Horkey got the start, after pitching five scoreless innings of relief last Friday in the big win against E Forsyth. He started well and had them scoreless after 2 2/3 but then NWG started to get to him and he left down 4-1. Matt Ambrose, another soph lefty came on in relief (he went four as the starter against East) and pitched the next 2 1/3 scoreless innings. He gave the ball to senior Mitch Carstens who shut down NWG the last two innings. Those same three pitchers shut out East last Friday night over ten innings.

Ragsdale got to Haack in the fourth for four runs, Morrison had another single on a great at bat and Horkey drove in a run with a hit. NW defense didn't help their pitchers tonight, but Ragsdale put the ball in play and made them have to make plays. Niko Orfanedes had his second consecutive game winning hit on a soft hit down the line that Haack couldn't handle.

Ragsdale now 5-0, 3-0 and keeps pace with SW Guilford in the Piedmont Triad 4A. This is a young and very resilient Tiger team that is very fun to watch.
