A Hough vs East Meck Classic!

Hough and EM faced off in the final game of the Spring Break Classic last night and it was one for the ages.

East looked early on like they had already checked out for spring break. Two uncharacteristic errors on routine plays by Tennant Gardner and David Marvin put the Eagles in a 3-0 hole. Then Johnny Piedmonte hit a 2 run bomb to extend the lead to 5-0.

Then the tide began to turn. East was able to cut the lead to 5-3 and there appeared to be a little more life in Coach Koppe's squad. Hough pushed the lead back to 3 going to the bottom of the 7th and the eagles had the bottom of their order coming up. But as the old saying goes, you can't measure heart. East put some runners on base and got back to the top of the order. Gardner hit into what should have been a 1-6-3 double play but his dive into first just beat the throw (took the sting out of that earlier error) to keep the inning alive. Logan Sherer followed with an rbi single, Justin Strong was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and that brought up David Marvin, who was also looking for a little redemption from his earlier error. Marvin ripped a pitch down the 3rd base line to tie the game. By the time Rashad Webster (Classic All Tournament Team) came to the plate, he had Jaques Ikolo and his 4.4 speed standing 90 ft away representing the winning run. Webster quickly went down 0-2 in the count but fought off a series of pitches to stay alive. Staying alive paid off because on the 7th pitch of his at bat the ball got past the Hough catcher and Ikolo came home for the winning run.

The atmosphere of that last at bat was amazing. Between pitches the crowd was in a frenzy but as the pitcher came set for each pitch, it was quiet as a tomb. Everybody was on the edge of their seat.

It was one of the greatest ball games I have ever seen for a number of reason but the one reason that will always stand out, above anything else, is the fact that these kids won this game for each other. The guys that had to be feeling sick for putting their team in a hole came up huge. The young guys in the bottom of the order never backed down from the challenge. And Jacque Ikolo, a kid who almost never gets in a game other than to pinch run, put his head down and never looked at anything but that plate.

    North Meck/Catholic

North Meck rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win this one. Ryder Ryan, the impressive sophomore, threw 152 pitches to get the win!!!! Watch that boy's arm, please!!!! He also delivered with a 2 run 7th inning HR for the game winner earning a spot on the All-Tournament team. He is a wonderful young talent. Chase Arnold was 2-4 for Catholic with a 2B and a HR and Eddie Hull, the Wingate signee, continued to swing the bat well going 2-3 with a triple for Catholic. He was also named to the All-Tournament team -- going 6-9 on the week -- with a HR on Tuesday vs. Independence.
