Let's get back on topic........if Providence is VERY VERY good.....what is the explanation for 24 strikeouts in 2 games (last two boxes I see on southwestern website); now mind you it does appear that they are VERY VERY good on the bump with Buttrey and Herbert and yes they have had some explosions offensively (MP and SM) but guys and girls we are talking about a one and done.....the PLAYOFFS....PLAYOFFS! What happens if a game goes 14-15 innings and you get to their 3, 4, or 5? That is an actual question and not a statement. How good are they on the bump after Buttrey and Herbert?

    I respectfully beg to differ.
NCHSAA gives those games to the association of their choosing, on what is a rotating basis. The association then chooses which officials show up. This is NOT a rating system done out of "evaluations". Yes, you hope for better umpires, but often times it is "veteran" chosen. And, while I mean no disrespect, there ar some veterans that are simply not as good as some younger guys.

I'll put it this way and leave it alone:
Just a couple of years ago, one association in the Triad (that most recently has only held onto softball umpiring, with most others dropping them from baseball) was "awarded" a certain classification's state finals. In one game, the plate umpire called the game in CLEATS - hard rubber-stobbed cleats designed for players' wear! (May seem trivial, but ask ANON and others about the message given by that attire.) The games were umpired and played, and no one died or anything, but those guys had mostly called fast-pitch softball all season - and were awarded a state final. You could tell with their mechanics and positioning at times.

Trust me, games are not given solely on evaluation and merit. That may be said, but it is not carried out...

    #3

Their #3 is Jackson Campana a 6'6" 3B who is committed to Clemson. He is 90-92. They have another senior (LHP) named Dugdale who is pretty strong and a 6'8" Sophmore (Doolittle) reliever too. And for the heck of it a situational submariner named Woodliff.

I think they have 16 seniors?

These are the primary guys they rely on.

Buttrey, Ty P, DH – Senior Arkansas
Campana, Jackson 3B – Senior Clemson
Herbert, Mike P and RF – Senior Uncommitted (14-0 career at Providence)
MacLatchie, Andrew C – Senior Furman
Rothman, Jacob 1B – Senior MIT
Madox, Xander CF – Senior Richmond
    Reyes, Danny - Senior
    Woodliff, Guy LF – Senior
    Fischel, Adam MIF - Senior
    Black, Josh RF - Junior
    DeJuneas, Tommy 2B – Sophmore
    Proehl, Austin SS – Sophmore

They have 16 of the 36 Home Runs hit by SW4A players (45% of total)
8 different guys with at least 1 BBCOR Home Run.

    Providence Home Run Leaders
    Name School HR's
    Jackson Campana P 4
    Andrew MacLatchieP 3
    Ty Buttrey P 2
    Xander Maddox P 2
    Mike Herbert P 2
    Tommy Dejuneas P 1
    Jacob Rothman P 1
    Guy Woodlift P 1

    Pitching
    Ty Buttrey 7-0
    Mike Herbert 4-0
    Jimmy Doolittle 1-0
    Sam Dugdale 3-1
    Jackson Campana 2-0
    Guy Woodliff 1-0

The only game they lost they didn't use Buttrey or Herbert. (See Innings Pitched below)

    Weddington 7 Providence 6

    Providence IP
    Dugdale, Sam 1.1
    Doolittle, Jimmy 0.2
    Leonard, Austin 2.1
    Fischel, Adam 0.0
    Campana, Jackson 2.2

The moral of the story for their pitching is that they have 3 #1's and a #2 and they have a 6'8" sophmore learning how to pitch so he can dominate the next two years. Campana doesn't start. He comes in late in games so you can see that they won't be using their #1 and #2 in the same game like most do when they face elimination.

I'm very comfortable saying if you don't beat them in the One and Done rounds forget it. I doubt very seriously that anybody can figure out a way to beat them twice in a short 3 game series that has to be played in two days!

In their biggest game of the year (vs. Ardrey Kell for 1st Place in the SW4A) they went with Herbert who is their #2. He two hit AK and beat them 4-1. AK went with a fantastic pitcher named Trent Thornton who is committed to the University of North Carolina. Providence pushed 4 earned runs across against him. Trust me folks. Thornton is as good as whatever you plan on running out there against them. AND what is it you plan on doing in games #2 and #3??????

    Guy Woodliff

FYI -- Guy Woodliff is yet another college-bound player from Providence -- he committed to Guilford a couple of weeks ago. Congrats to little Edgar!!
