    Catholic/East Gaston

Charlotte Catholic hung on last night to defeat East Gaston 6-4 in front of a standing room only crowd on Senior Night at Jack Hughes Park in Pineville. Chase Arnold and Eddie Hull each had 2 hits for the Cougars and Jordan Accetta pitched 6 solid innings for the win. East Gaston was coming off of 2 consecutive wins over Olympic and defending State 3A champion -- and previously undefeated Belmont South Point. The win by Catholic sets up a winner-take-all rematch Friday night at Olympic for the MEGA 7 conference championship at 7:00 pm.

I certainly wasn't trying to imply the players weren't competing; far from it. The atmosphere was electrifying as usual. However, dating back to when Bag's was at South Meck to now, I can't recall seeing a game that wasn't a nailbiter. Even the game when Richie Shaffer was a freshman and he hit 3 hr's (the final one was a walkoff.) That game Providence led by 7-8 runs at one point.

But you stake Trent Thornton an 8 run lead...he ain't losing...no matter how competitive Providence is. But I believe that Providence is still the most talented team out there and I expect them to go deep into the playoffs. But it only takes one hot pitcher and good defense to narrow the gap in talent.

Also I should add that Ty Buttrey pitched a heckuva game. A couple of plays determined the score and what should have been a no score game turned into a 4-0 cushion. As I stated, AK is a scrappy bunch; they fear nothing!

    Great Moments in AK/PHS history

Braves, my reply was worded poorly in terms of players being competitive... I know you didn't intend it that way. No worries.

However, to correct another misunderstanding...Thornton thought you were saying "Are you away" (as in visitor) - and he said "Yeah." Then when you asked again, he thought you may have been "just a dad" and said it a little louder! Ha ha ha!!! Now that's funny!

But, your post brought some moments in AK/PHS history to mind. My personal favorite - AK down 5-1 at PHS in playoffs and comes back to win 6-5...last out....Shaffer at the plate A-Wood on the bump....classic and perhaps the most exciting moment in the history of the rivalry.

There are others that I have selectively eliminated from my database.

Last night the 5 seed knocks off the 4 as North Davidson beats Mt Tabor 8-4 and tonight the 6 beats the 3 as Reynolds beats Reagan 7-4. No scouts at the game but a pretty good contingent of SW4A coaches on hand.

** After flipping the coin, it appears that Whispering Pines B-B-Q in Albemarle is our winner for my families pre-game dinner. Between that and the Log Cabin I don't think you can really go wrong!

LOL..yeah, Jeff Pm'd me and told me what Trent thought I said. I still thought he was going to drill me if I didn't move quickly......and rightfully so

    One of my favorites, too

I wish you were around during the SM vs Providence rivalries. There is nothing else that can compare. Two programs, at the time, that hated each other---that goes for coaches, parents, kids, and their pets. Awww....those were the days!!!

Cuthbertson Wins the Rocky River Conference Tournament!!

For the 3 years that Cuthbertson HS has been in existence, they have taken the Conference Tournament and, at the very least, a part of the overall conference title each and every year!

    Championship Game

    Cuthbertson - 6
    Piedmont - 2

WP - CG - Andrew Hendel

There were a few close calls by the umpires that could have gone either way and this night they played to Cuthbertson HS. This is a rivalry that should continue for years in Union County.

+1 on the Bar-B-Q...Whispering Pines Bar-B-Q (Est. 1945) in Albemarle on 52 now has the TexasLeaguer seal of approval. Now that was good eatin'! My thanks to "Foots" for suggesting the detour.
