And again I make this argument........with the 3 wins over the last 3 years in the playoffs and the fact that Austin and Fincher are not in their lineup means to me in my humble opinion that they are about the same or maybe even a little down compared to years past......so why is everyone picking them again? The stress and anxiety of even the best teams will be tested when you have to win 8 to get a ring.....

The answer is: Only team in the last five years to enter the 4A West playoffs with a sub .500 record to advance to the sectional (4th) round.

I've been away from HS baseball for a while, but my alma mater that I used to play for (graduated in '08) is lined up to play against Providence in the 2nd round. I came to TBR specifically to ask how good Providence was this year since I've been out of the loop, and I see a thread about their chance against th field! Geez, thanks TBR!

In all seriousness though, are they pretty much widely considered to be the best team in North Carolina? I know Providence has had several teams that were nationally ranked in recent years.

They are a very talanted team, in fact the most talanted team I have seen this season. I have also seen them lose several games this year and squeak past an number of other clubs throughtout the season.

Of all the teams that I have seen this year, I would like to start the playoffs with their talant. They have a bat up and down the line up that can beat you on any night. They have a legiatmate number 1 pitcher and their number 2 has not lost a game in his high school career. Their bullpen, when needed, has been long and effective. Generally, their defense is good. However, there are so many good players and teams across the state that it is rare anymore that any one club dominates thought the playoff bracket.

Without question Providence has the capability of winning the state championship, but that is by no means is a statement saying they will. They are also capable of losing to a team that might not be good enough to win eight games in the playoffs but are good enough to win the one that is in front of them.

The playoffs identify a champion, not necessarily the best team.

    Good post mincmi.

SW Guilford (my alma mater) also has some really good arms, but one in particular that's committed to UNC. The #2 guy is going to UNC-Charlotte and the #3 guy will be D1 too (he's a junior and hasn't committed yet).

I'm sure Providence would win a majority of the time if the two teams played, but we all know how funny baseball is. All it takes is the bats going cold for one night, or one night that you hit a lot of "at 'em" balls.

    CPC

As a CPC guy, it will be interesting to see how badly they beat Tabor in the first round. Tabor doesn't score many runs, but Wells and St. Claire are two very good pitchers who don't give up many. If they put up a big number against Tabor, it will give us some perspective on how badly this could go for the other CPC teams.
