The older I get the less I know!

I guess Kelly never found that catcher who could hit over .400 and possibly offered up too many recruited walk on positions.

    Lack of fundementals

What I saw time and time again was the lack of basic fundemental softball. Then some members of the team took on the personality of the coach, non agressive, and unexcited. BP was lack luster and extra BP was turned away by staff where early in the season extra BP was accepted. After the trip to Fla. the staff seemed to give up. Even had had an "optional practice" week. And don't even get me started on not allowing players to strech before a game because it was bad for you! Then we had players dropping out due to injury.
As for the too many recruited walk on comment, if you look at the stats most of the players that had the most scholarship money had the worst stats. In my mind 87 errors is totally unacceptable and those with the most e's continued to play without offensive numbers. Hats off to Davenport for never giving up!
Losses were most often called a "moral victory". Seahawks had to lead the country in morals. Loss is a loss is a loss...period. Especially a D1 team.

I've often wondered, even before Kelly

Why UNCW wasn't one of the top D1's in the state. Heck, almost every kid I know wants to go to UNC, first or UNCW second. They are at the top of their lists! With the talent pool that they could be chose from, why would you not be one of the best in NC?

Kelly is a fantastic person. I wish her well in whatever she has come her way.

I too am the dad of a catcher that was recruited as a walk on. Played in front of Coach Kelly many times with numerous long ball shots. With the dismal hitting and run production on the UNCW team, just could not understand what she was looking for.

    Hmmm. . .

Finding a pitcher that strikes out 12 to 15 per game is difficult? I guess so. No one in the country did that this year. In fact, only a few have ever done that. The author of this piece needs to do a bit more research.
