    Pro ball means virtually nothing

    Very few "All-Americans" bother with it. No money, no future. It's a part-time summer job except for maybe six to eight players who have endorsement $$.

    Exactly, and you will not get a true shot at that without the Big Name.

    UNC to WCWS

    UNC to WCWS. #2 seed in Athens. Georgia, UNC, GA Southern and Coastal Carolina in the bracket. UNC the only D1 school from NC to make it to post season play.

    Dilution of talent

    I count 19 D1 softball programs in North and South Carolina. Let's do some math. If you figure 20 (probably low) players per team that's 380 roster slots. Given attrition it's likely that you need to recruit 30% of that number each year. That's 114 roster slots! You can see the problem. I'm not sure the two states produce 114 legitimate players per year if you include all levels (D1-D3). The math clearly shows why coaches at these schools have to cast a wide net.
