I agree... the conference tournament takes a week and the playoffs start the following Friday. Thats 2 weeks to have 4 local regionals with the 4 winners advancing to the second round and the winner of that plays to advance to the state championship. :42:

This sums it up well. The team that seems to always come up in the conversation is Providence. They have won a ton of games and have had some great ball clubs. But the reality is that they have won three playoff games in four years. Twice they were eliminated in the first round. So at some point, they need to look in the mirror and figure out why they struggle so much when it comes playoff time. Changing the format isn't going to fix that.

The current format may not be perfect. Very few (if any) playoffs are. But it crowns a worthy champion each and every year. Keep in mind that the best baseball TEAM is not always the one that has accumulated the most talent.

I have no dog in this fight. Just someone who loves and care about the game.

There's a very good reason why teams play series against one another in college and professional baseball. A one-game, winner-take-all game in baseball makes very little sense when the stakes are high.

If the practical considerations associated with high school schedules prevents the playoffs from being conducted as series, so be it. However, there's no question that 3-game playoffs would lead to a much truer outcome.

That same Aycock team the year before played a D.H. Conley team with Colorado Rockies/UNC Tarheel pitcher Alex White in the first round. One of the greatest games i've ever seen. Conley wins in extras and goes on to win a state title. What did Aycock do, ready themselves for the next year... result, champs in '07. No whining, just ready to win the next year.

This article isn't sour grapes, that's putting it mildly, it's sour puss.

Hignest seed in E or W should play lowest seed

I would like to see few teams enter the playoffs and those teams seeded (for example) 1-16 for the east and west. The seedings should be done by the NCHSAA based on each team's entire body of work. Sorta in the NCAA RPI. Then, 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15, etc.. I would perfer a 3 game series w/ only 8 teams each from the E & W entering the playoff but that would not pass political muster so it would still be one and out in the 1st two rounds. At least the best team in the east/ west would not playing the # 3-4 team in rounds 1 or 2. In this way the best teams would meet in the 2nd & 3rd rounds or E/W finals. There are some power house conferences (I-Meck, Tri-9, etc.) that could very easily have 2 teams in the eastern or western championships. And, deservingly so. It would require more travel but would be more in line w/ traditional bracketing.

Of course if you're like Holly Spring last year and sweep the entire playoffs without a loss it doesn't matter who you play.

I'm sorry. I thought the objective had something to do with determining the better team.

It's axiomatic that a series of games will determine the better team with greater frequency than a single one. ...and, particularly in baseball, a single game can be won by the lesser team.

    Reality!!!

Law1ng2b2 hit the nail on the head! STOP whinning and look at your program and figure out WHY you are not having success in the playoffs! The format was not a problem when Smitty won a State Championship at Providence nor was it a problem when AK and Bags won it all a few years ago!! Never will you find Bagwell in a paper or any other forum making excuses for his team not reaching their potential! He's already preparing for next year and the first thing he is going to do is look at himself and his program and evauluate what HE and his staff need to do to give themselves a better chance to win it all next year. He is not sitting around making EXCUSES and blaming the FORMAT!!! THAT'S WHY HE HAS A RING AND WILL WIN ANOTHER IN TIME!!!! Cannot say the same for the guy at Providence as he was in the paper Sunday whinning about the format that has been in place since they started crowning championships. If Providence were playing this weekend this thread would not even exist!!!!

    Quit Whining!!

I'm surprised they even have an article about this while the playoffs haven't even finished. Seems to be pretty disrespectful towards teams still playing. I don't know the coaches that were quoted in this article, but I can ask a simple question...why would you answer the question from the newspaper? You lost..it is what it is! We (coaches) all know what the format is..we all deal with it. When we lose we don't cry about the format. We realize that on that day, the other team was better than us. No excuses. If you make excuses as the coach, what do you think your players are going to do?

On a separate note..congrats to head coach of Middle Creek Jeremy Thompson! He is one of the best coaches in the state of NC. What he's done with this team is incredible. He get's more out of his teams than I've seen of any coach in a long time and he does things the right way. Good Luck this weekend, I hope you bring another State Championship to the Tri-9!! I can promise you one thing, if they are on the wrong side of it when all said and done...Jeremy won't complain about the format. He'll tip his cap to the other team and go back to work for next year!!
