    SCBL is a GREAT League

My son plays in the SCBL. As Braves said, he got very little playing time as a freshman this year even though he was a D-1 scholarship ballplayer. His freshman year was very frustrating going from being all state in high school and playing even inning of every game for his entire life to riding the pine. It was tough to say the least. Playing 6 times a week has renewed his love for the game. There are players from all over the country and every college in NC in this league. My son was asked to play a new position in college, that he never played in high school, so his position skills needed developing. He's getting invaluable GAME experience that he will take back to school in the fall. And last night he got his 1st collegiate home run.

That brings a big smile on my face at a time I needed one!

I hope catcher10 won't mind me saying this:

His son didn't get to play much his freshman year; this coming off a sensational HS career gathering every award available. He was frustrated, hurt and thought about every option available. He got an opportunity to play in the SCBL...and boy did he play. The enthusiasm was back, the cockiness was back and his skill sets were no longer rusty (of course, his team did win the dadgum Championship and he can wear with pride the championship ring---actually, he has two, now.)

The point I want to make is this: The young man was despondent, confused and frustrated with his playing time. It happens to most freshman players. He played summer baseball and rediscovered his enthusiasm.

The player I'm speaking of just hit his first professional homerun this week.

Exactly....and I might add the best play by play man. If you want to listen to the best, check out The Captain on the Morganton Aggies website

Braves - you hit the nail on the head, I believe the true purpose of the SCBL is "Opportunity". Coach Shoe (Copperheads) deserves all the credit after that rough first collegiate season; without him giving Tyler an opportunity, the outcome could have been much different. Dave Collins and Coach Brewer (Pioneers) followed the next summer with the same opportunity, again keeping the competitive juices flowing right through the summer season and into fall practices. The SCBL provides opportunities, players just need to take advantage of those opportunities and do their best.

My son also has really enjoyed his opportunity with the SCBL and the Ballantyne Smokies. Ballantyne runs a great program under their new ownership and Coach Spencer. For my son, this summer was about three things. 1. He Finished a successful freshman year at a D3program and loved it However, he always believed that he could compete at higher levels. The SCBL gave him that chance and now he knows that he can. 2. He worked on a new pitch and perfecting a different grip on another pitch. AND 3. He loves baseball and plays any chance he gets.

He's had a blast and so have we. The Smokies have shot to the top of the standings for a reason. Coach Spencer has assembled a talented group of kids who all love the game. We're also having a blast rooting them on. The Smokies have a great atmosphere for home games with minor league style activities between innings. The SCBL is just fine and dandy as far as I'm concerned.

    Thank You SBCL

All this debate about the purpose of the SBCL seemed a bit contrived from the start, yet in all the postings no one seems to take notice or makes mention of the hours and hours of volunteered time that the team owners devote to the development of players and promoting the benefits of the game of baseball within their communities. The SBCL is a non-profit league and in most cases, if not all, every team is personally subsidized directly out of the pockets of the team owners. I am not privy to their annual budgets but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that operating expenses for a team in the SBCL is probably in the range of $30K - $40K for a season. These people are the true stewards of the game. They take nothing, expect nothing in return and give everything. They deserve our thanks, appreciation and support.
This entire thread started with a parent asking “What is the purpose of the SBCL”. At this level it’s difficult to imagine a parent still asking questions for a colligate player. So I would add another very important purpose for the SBCL, Player Maturity.
