Tournament

Any final word on how the tournament will work? Originally heard that top 6 teams only (of 7) would go to the tourney and it would either be played Thurs, Fri, Sat or Fri, Sat, and Mon. Just trying to make some travel plans and would love to have further info. Seems to me if doing single or double elimination that it would be just as well to have all 7 teams compete - especially since the standings are so close and rain may come into play this week. That would give 1 bye instead of 2 in the first round. Thanks for any info.

 

Smokies 8, Copperheads 5

The Smokies and Copperheads squared off last nigjt at Lake Norman with the Smokies winning 8-5. Olen Little threw a gem and lasted 6 2/3 allowing 1 hit. The game was 1-0 advantage Smokies before homeruns by Shane Basen and James Fowlkes homered with two outs in the 5th. The Copperheads battled back scoring an unearned run off of Little in the 6th, then putting up 4 in the top of thebottom of 8 putting the Copperheads up by 1. The Smokies had some outstanding at bats in the top of 9 with Cody Blood knocking in the game tying run. Pinch hitter Jason Troy stepped up next and with an 0-2 count, drilled a double in to left center to plate the game winner. The Smokies would tack on a couple more in their half of the inning making the final score 8-5.

The Smokies will be on the road today at Statesville and Saturday at Clemson before coming back home on Monday night.

 

Pioneers Back-to-Back Double Headers

7/13 Pineville, NC - Back at home finally proved to be a little help to the Pioneers! After a rain out on Wednesday, the Pioneers had plenty of rest and were back in action to play vs. Lake Norman in the double header. Apparently, rest wasn’t the key issue as Pioneers won game one and were slaughtered in game two.
In game one, the Pioneers managed to defeat the Copperheads 8-6. Both teams played well but the Pioneers battled their best in the second and fifth innings. The Copperheads scored consistently throughout the game however it wasn’t enough. In the second, with hits by Stefan Jordan, Brandon Wilt, and a SAC fly by Brett Thompson, the Pioneers scored four runs putting them ahead 4-3 after two innings.
However, by the fifth inning, Pioneers had yet to score again and the Copperheads advanced with a 5-4 lead. As Daniels walked on and Perez advanced on error, Anthony Dimino rocketed a 2 RBI double bringing both runners in. After Tony Brandner and Adam Venditti were walked, Brandon Wilt manages a SAC fly scoring Dimino. Newcomber Ben Boykin follows with an RBI single scoring Brandner. The Pioneers ended the fifth inning with an 8-5 lead. In the seventh, Copperhead scored only one granting the Pioneers an 8-6 win.
Paul Stelling earned the win after pitching 2.2 innings allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 5 walks and 1 strike out. Ryan McClintock earned the save allowing 1 run on 2 hits. Copperheads pitcher Josh Powell suffered the loss.
Pioneers win proved to be a one a day thing, yet again, in this double header. In game two, Pioneers lack of enthusiasm showed as they lost 11-0. Dean D’Ambrosio managed the only hit in the entire game. Game two was called after five complete innings granting Copperheads pitcher Trey Lambert the win, almost pitching a no-hitter! Jeffrey Springs suffered the loss surrendering 6 runs on 6 hits. Taylor Cook and Caleb Henley attempted to battle back but by the end of five, the game was complete.
Pioneers will play again at home for a double header against the Statesville Owls, July 14 at 5pm.

7/14 Pineville, NC - The Pioneers and Statesville Owls battled hard in a great game that went into extra innings for Game One. Pioneers managed a 5-4 win; game two was cancelled on account of pouring rain after just two innings.
In game one, Pioneers showed up rather late as the Copperheads led 4-0 through the seventh. In the the bottom of the seventh inning, Pioneers managed to tie it up. With back-to-back singles, Diego Perez, Anthony Dimino, and Matt Pelt loaded this bases. An error by the second baseman allowed two runs to score and Tony Brandner to advance on a dropped third strike. As Adam Venditti walked on, the bases again, were loaded. As Ben Boykin singled to center, two runs scored to tie the game. Pioneers ended the inning advancing into the 8th with a 4-4 tie.
Pioneers allowed no runs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, David Daniels singled to left field. With an error by the catcher, Diego Perez advances to first putting Daniels on second. Anthony Dimino was walked to load the bases again. With a walk off single by Tony Brandner, Pioneers win, 5-4.
Bryan DaCanal managed to pitch 5 great innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Kevin Joo earned the win pitching 3 innings allowing no runs on one hit with only two walks and three strikeouts.
After a game two rainout, Pioneers will travel away to Hope Well High School to play the Lake Norman Copperheads on Monday, July 16 at 7pm!

Has there been any word on the All Star Roster? I thought it was going to be decided by July 15th.

How are the allstars picked?

 

Overall play over the first part of the season as observed by the coaching staffs of all the teams. Stats play into it on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, but are not the only determining factor. There are a set number of players selected for each position.

Each coach nominates players from their team based on what they know about them, but also based on the guys from the other teams they have watched in those positions and who they believe is the most deserving. The coaches all meet and discuss all of the nominated players and select the team based on number of players for each position.

 

so they should use some stats on pitchers? ERAs and strike out to walks ratio. looks like some real funny stuff going on. some ERAs over 7 runs per game. leaving players out with some great numbers.(joey Mcalpin) of Statesville. real politics going on here. can you pay your way in?

Perplexed...but have possible explaination

I know 2 pitchers in the SCBL all-star game. Great kids. They've pitched very well. I'm proud of them. As are their families. I'm sure that's how most feel. All the all-star pitchers except a couple have the lowest ERA's, solid stats, and/or higher IP's on their teams.

I had to look really close to understand the accusation above. It came across pretty harsh. I haven't seen the Owls play. But unless there are extenuating circumstances... something like attitudes or vacations or injury or poinstreak mis-entries or pitchers raw "stuff", i was perplexed and confused. Stephen Gilmore's numbers are outstanding and he's an alternate. (K/BB ratio 22/9, ERA 2.55) So are Mc Alpin's (8/1, ERA 2.84) . Then it hit me. It looks like they are relievers/closers. And the all-stars from that staff are starters. Beyond that I'm not sure what separates them.

Just trying to offer an explanation. Not saying it's right, or trying to stir the pot. Best of luck.
