    cherryville wins tuesday night 7/24

Sorry for poor details. I think final was 6-3 cherryville. Nice crowd. The rain stayed away. Beautiful field of the South Point "Red Raiders".

cherryville scores early. applies some pressure with some PFP's (push bunts to the 1B side). Then at one point it was 3-3 in the 6th? after a HR from the Braves. then 4-3 with a timely hit (Best rips one up the middle), and untimely throwing error and a dropped flare to RF. Sorry, can't remember details exactly.

Cherryville wins 6-3 in a game that had 10 errors committed. (6-4) The Gaston starter could flat bring it and was a little wild in the first two innings and Cherryville was able to score three runs in the 2nd to take an early 3-0 lead. Gaston battled back against Dlyan Hastings and was able to tie it up in the 6th (I think) Thomas Bess hit the game winning homerun in the 7th and Cherryville tacked on two more runs with a Seth Weekly RBI and a muffed pop fly by the 2nd baseman allowing our runner to advance to third and then scored on the throwing error on the same play. Cherryville wins and takes the 3-1 series lead. Game 5 tonight at Cherryville at 7!

Hey if you guys from Caldwell aint got nothing to do come on down.

This has got to be the most polite underhanded smack of the year. You definitely get props for that one... :smug:

Great pre-game prayer & and a dirty plate

The prayer following the legion player oath and proceeding the national anthem was probably the best I've ever heard at a baseball game. Having gone to alot of showcase games lately, the significance of having all 3 of those before the game is not lost on me. It's a great thing about Legion baseball.

Wish I could say the same about arguing balls and strikes and some other antics. And the umpire not carrying or using a small broom to sweep off home plate.

One of the fan showed "out of the box" thinking by offering a 4' long plastic broom to the home plate umpire under the backstop net.

The older fan offered it to the Cherryville coach who said "oh no" (I can't take that). Then, after standing around after the warm up pitches, the 3rd base umpire called time and explained that the fan should not become part of the game. I was a little worried for the old guy's safety back there. Since he was probably a veteran, most gave him laugh, or heckled him softly.

Both sides were frustrated when the home plate umpire seemed to go several innings without sweeping off home plate. Most of the game it was covered it dirt, and the crowd was unable to see even it's outline. Not seeing the plate makes it hard to second guess balls and strikes - the primary function of quite a few fans on both sides. Ironically, he called a pretty good game of balls and strikes.

At one point, a 3rd baseman called time, to discuss something with his pitcher, so that the catcher could dust off home plate. Which was a better choice than the fan offering the broom.

The umpire actually never swept off home plate, he just kicked at it with his shoe, which was not effective. It made me wonder if he ever cleaned up his room as a child.

Probably the last Legion game I'll see until the World Series or maybe the SE regional.

FB was 82 for Gaston starter. Worked his way up to 85 in mid innings where when he was more effective. He found his groove and got several K's. I was happy for a more competitive game in the mid innings as Braves tied the game.

Hastings for Cherryville changed speeds and locations and hit his spots and seemed to cruise through 9 innings with confidence. Giving up one HR to a good hitter. And scattered singles if he slipped and hung a pitch. When some pitchers warmed up in the bullpen, I got excited to see an exciting closer enter the game. But it was just a tease, they just seemed be be getting in some practice.

The Braves batters had difficulty with outside pitches all night, either missing them or rolling over. Most were setup or looking to pull the ball. Most inside pitches were pulled fly balls to LF, or hooked line drives. LF caught alot of fly balls. Braves seem to have players with speed but they struggled to get on base consistently. Credit the Cherryville catcher for calling a good game, and showing a nice arm, throwing out a Braves base runner early attempting to steal 2B.

Enjoy'd the atmosphere. Best to both sides.

You are correct Post 15 the guy never swept the plate and I never saw a broom in his hand all night. not even before the first pitch. I am ok with that the only issue I have is that he just did not take control of several situations. (the broom issue that he clearly seen when he was facing the crowd, the constant mouthing of balls and strikes from the batters was tolerated till the lead off hitter from Gaston was removed from the game at the end) With all that being said I think the worst call of the night came from the 1st base ump when he called the Post 100 runner out on the double play in the 4th or 5th inning. Any how I will retract my statement about the concession stand at South Point. The drinks were cold and they had a very wide selection of items to choose from last night.

    Game 5

was more of the same with the final score of 9-5 in the favor of Gaston. Cameron High started for Post 100 and was able to give them 6 innings and left with a 3-5 lead. Relief pitching was let down by a crucial error and a timely hit to center field to give Gaston the lead. Game 6 is tonight down at South Point.........
