Looking for some information here. My daughter has been asked to help the middle school softball team this fall and some have raised questions if it could be against any NCHSAA rules. She is a player at the high school and would merely be an assistant at the middle school. She isn't involved in a fall sport at the high school and of course it would not be a paid position. I am going to call the NCHSAA tomorrow for clarification, but thought I'd also check here first. I've never called them before so I'm not sure how quickly I will be able to speak to someone and get some "official" clarification on what she may or not be able to do. Any info here would be greatly appreciated.....

My daughter, while playing as a senior at the high school, was the assistant coach at a middle school in the same district. I can see no rule violation.

Thanks guys. I got their numbers and also Davis Whitfield's just before posting. I'm just not sure why some in "administrative positions" would speculate that it "might" be against the rules. In my opinion as an "administrator", you should either know the rules or call to get official verification when you're unsure. It's impossible to know all the state's rules and guidelines, but to not take the initiative to clarify instead of openly speculating is frustrating and displays poor leadership in my opinion. JMHO and sorry if that offends anyone.

Not trying to be mean but it sounds like someone cautioned you to be sure you were within the rules. Think of this way, it's not their DD.

That's the way I'm trying to look at it honestly and ultimately it is my job to look out for her, nobody else. I'm just not sure why they would speculate to others and then her about it "might" be against the rules. When I first asked myself what I would've done if I were in their position, I hope I would've clarified and educated myself as an administrator to protect my student athlete. I'm not sure why they warned her so to speak, without seeking clarification on any possible rules; nor did they contact either of her parents. Luckily DD brought it to my attention. If not, we might have never known there might be an issue.

Hopefully I can speak to someone today and get something official, and I'll let you know here.

    Thanks again!

Que and Mark are the main ones at the required annual softball rules clinic. So I would think you would get your quickest answer there. As I said, they will respond quickly.

Ok, talked to Mark today and after some discussion with others in their office it was decided that it was ok for her to serve as an assistant with the middle school. It wasn't a clear cut decision he said, so my advice to anyone in a similar situation would be to call them. There were some stipulations, but nothing to keep her from coaching. Better safe than sorry so to speak. Mark and the other gentleman I spoke with today were very helpful and accessible.

Im curious as to why this was not a clear cut decision? I know there are rules in place about HS practicing with MS but Im curious to this matter.
