We just faced a kid that went 7 complete on Tuesday (90 pitches give or take) then on Friday he threw another complete game (115 pitches). I thought this to be a bit excessive to say the least. I read the local paper the next day and it told that he had thrown 3 complete games in a 7 day span. 21 innings n a week!! There is NO way that can be good can it? The thing on this kid is he has committed to play college ball next year. Plus he has pro scouts following him and looks like he could be drafted. Would this scare them away as they wonder how much longer this kid could go before blowing his arm out??

    NCHSAA Handbook rules

From an earlier post from Coachsnead...

This is from the Baseball Information section of the NCHSAA Handbook.

Pitching Regulation : No player may pitch more than 12 innings during any consecutive three-day period, nor may a player make more than four appearances as a pitcher during any consecutive three-day period. One pitch constitutes an inning pitched or an appearance.

So basically the NCHSAA is saying as long as the arm does not fall off, you can keep rolling a pitcher out there - ridiculous. Time to look at that one boys.

There was a kid this year in the region that went 11 innings and 170-180.

    Pitches not innings

Too many coaches get caught up in the innings pitched and not the number of pitches. I saw a game this season where both starters went over 7 innings. 1 starter goes 8 innings, 115 pitches, 68 strikes. the other starter goes 9+, 114 pitches, 84 strikes. To see that a coach let a kid throw 170+ pitches is crazy, probably should not have gone more than 6 innings.

Agreed. # of innings is really not an issue - any coach that comes CLOSE to the # the NCHSAA allows really is making a questionable decision IMHO.

Pitch count is the key and while there are many factors to consider (age, throwing style, weather, etc.), some of the counts I see listed here are ridiculous for an adult in college or pro, let alone a developing young man.
